Well! Here it is, 5 days until Christmas. Exhausted and running on fumes. The gifts are bought, some wrapped and given, some not. The pre-lit tree is up but not decorated. But thats ok.
At work, I hear a lot of people saying they are trimming down on Christmas, but this is a good thing. Get back to the basics of what Christmas is really all about. The birth of Christ, realizing how blessed we are with our friends and family. Being able to share some good times and laughs.
In a time of horrible economy, it has made a lot of us wonder what we will have to give up to survive. We have gloated for a long time in what we possess. A house bigger than what we need. Cars bigger than what we need. We have trashed food senselessly, because we didnt use it or do not like leftovers. I have this big toy, you have that big toy.
I have had the luxury of being raised in a rather large Christian home. All the years may not have been perfect, but we always had our family to depend on for love and strength.
Four years ago, on Mothers Day, my dad passed away peacefully in his sleep. Since then, I have reflected on what is really important in life. With his passing, it has put a wedge in our family relationships, maybe its just too painful even now to see the family isnt complete. Feelings are still hurting, phone calls and visits as not as frequent as they should be.
So, here it is Christmas, and people are worried about what to buy for someone, when the biggest and best gift we can give each other is love. Why not go to your family and give them a real warm hug and tell them you love them. They will remember that all year more than the gift you will give.
