On Love

In “Works of Love”, Soren Kierkegaard wrote:

If it were so, as conceited sagacity, proud of not being deceived, thinks, that we should believe nothing which we cannot see with our eyes, then first and foremost we ought to give up on believing in love. If we were to do so and do it out of fear lest we be deceived, would we not then be deceived?

Now, I liked that. What Kierkegaard is saying is that one can be deceived by believing in something false, but one can be just as deceived by not believing in something that is real. What this great philosopher was telling me when I read this was simply: “get out there”. Your friend and humble blogger was getting a little fired up. “He’s right”, thought I, “I just need to step it up, find my soul-mate, woo her with my charm, put my brand on her and live happily ever after”.

But then, I got to thinking.

Kierkegaard is the same great philosopher who at age 27, broke off a three-year engagement to the love of his life. Although it is clear that it was Kierkegaard who pulled the plug on the relationship, he continued to be obsessed the woman for the rest of his life, leaving her what he had in his will. How nutty is that? So to be inspired by Kierkegaard to believe in love, is a lot like being inspired by the Catholic Church to believe in Darwinism. I guess it’s back to the drawing board for your humble blogger. I’m sure I’ll revisit this whole “love thing” at some point in the future. As for now, there are more pressing questions to ponder such as:

How long until one becomes officially celibate?

I like when you think, but I think you overthought this one...

You are officially celibate when you no longer lust in your heart...or your loins...or if, when you do, you can't remember what it felt like.

I think being officially celibate is when you have no chance in hell of ever getting any!

Like most men - and many women, Kierkegaard found that it was easier to love from afar, than to deal with the day to day process of maintaining a relationship.

And celibate is but a state of mind... One can be celibate for 5 minutes - or forever...

Or just logistically... like me .

BTW, as for your question, me thinks redtigr hit the nail on the head.
