Psychology Today . . .
Nietzsche once said that Fyodor Dostoevsky “was the only psychologist from whom I had anything to learn”. I share both Nietzsche’s appreciation for Dostoevsky, and his disdain for psychologist (not to mention his arrogance). I do, however, have a burning fascination with human behavior. I believe it’s just the formal study of human behavior that I dislike.
My new job at The Machine has given me a new appreciation for my appreciation of human behavior. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t care much for my job (and I would give it up in a second if only one of you wealthy ladies would just say the word) but there’s something to be said about working with 200 or so other people in a mindless job.
There are two men’s rooms each about 30 yards from my work area. The one to the south of my area is a fairly modern looking facility that has both an entrance from the factory floor, and from the office area. About thirty yards to the west is another, more modest looking, men’s room situated completely on the factory floor. The south bathroom is always in pristine condition, while the west one is not. I suppose this is really the vestige of human behavior as opposed to the behavior itself, but I’m in awe of the fact that you could eat ice cream off the floor of the south men’s room, while the west men’s room is a combination cesspool/booger museum. I wonder if the west bathroom naturally attracts the most disgusting of us, or is it simply a case “when in Rome”. I thought it might behoove me to alternate my restroom visits between the two so that I might compare and contrast, and perhaps over time discover the reason(s) for the differences. I shall get no further in my studies, however, as I made a vow to my immediate co-workers last week that I’ll not visit the cesspool again proclaiming: “Rog is not an animal”.
I’m now content to restrict my human behavior observations to the break/lunch room. There is, for instance, a large woman who eats two bags of Cheetos everyday for lunch. That’s it. Her entire lunch consist of two bags of Cheetos. She did throw me a bit of a curve last Friday, as, for the first time in 5 weeks, she altered her routine by eating three bags of Cheetos. It’s unclear to me whether this is indeed a change in routine or an anomaly; perhaps she just skipped breakfast that day. I won’t really know until I return to work on Monday. I can hardly wait.
