Oh, Pud, great wonder dog, where are you?
Were you really dognapped
or did you go on another of your great adventures?
I can't see you, so I don't know.
I can only remember you...
Like the first time I saw you, you were so tiny!
You fit right in the palm of the hand
of the homeless guy who gave you to me!
I thought you were a beagle, you were so miniscule
with those brown, flappy ears and huge eyes.
He said he found you
wandering down the stripe in the middle of North State Street!
I should have known then that you were no ordinary puppy!
I dubbed you PUD,
and took you home to Stella,
who was delighted.
I don't know why the name Pud came to me.
Maybe it was Bazooka Joe's pal from the bubble gum wrapper.
Later, that name would take on a different meaning,
when you started humping people's legs.

Stella loved, puppies, kittens, , and the Grateful Dead.
Stella hated jobs, housework, and fidelity.
How you tried to tell me Kozmik was banging her
By humping his leg, looking at me, and barking.
That was kinda funny, wasn't it?
You thought it was, I didn't.
I already knew what you were trying to tell me.

Anyway, it was Stella and I who raised you from that tiny runt
who was housetrained within a week
and learned to fetch small objects like rolled up cigarette boxes.
And it was Stella who rushed me to the ER
after my appendix had burst
and you warned her that something was wrong with me
by barking, because I couldn't speak.

But, it was you, Pud, who was always totally there,
totally loyal and aware and ready to take appropriate action
to save the day, when need be.

Mighty Pud, who had pets of your own,
a kitten you adopted (you always loved cats!),
and Iggy, the Iguana, who used to ride around the house
on your back, half for warmth,
half for protection because
you'd bite anyone (but me) who tried to touch your Iguana!

That was after you got "experienced" at the Dead show.
I shouldn't have left you with those rednecks
while Stella and I wandered off into the vast crowds
around the Atlanta Omni.
When we came back (shortly, because I hate crowds, especially when I'm !) they were guffawing about something
and after they drove off, and left you with us,
I suddenly realized something.
You were !
I panicked for a second, became furious at those idiots
that you.
Your pupils were black under bright light,
and you were shaking and nervous.
You never looked so paranoid before.
Stella picked up on it, too, and it broke my anger and panic,
trying to quell hers.
I came up with a plan (interesting thing to do in that state!)
We took you to the VW campervan of Skye and Earthbud
and we all kicked back and listened to
The Moody Blues' " Days of Future Passed",
and we all mellowed out in a big puddle
on cushions and quilts,
and you were right there with us,
on our wavelength.
And,
more than us,
from then onward,
you had a special sort of intelligence,
a second sight.

You went on tour with us.
We went to the Rainbow gathering in Florida.
You had the time of your life,
running free,
chasing female dogs,
licking cats,
scarfing food,
biting rude winos...
You always hated the obnoxiously drunk,
as I do,
You loved to bite unruly winos!
That one guy that tried to kick you,
you grabbed him by the seat of his pants
and threw him on the ground, over and over.
That was funny as hell!
You never really hurt anybody, did you, Pud ?
You were always in control.
More than we stupid humans were.

Remember how you rode the big inner tube
in that beautiful bay in Tampa,
and those guys tried to spin you off
and they fell into the water,
and you stayed on, wagging your tail and barking at them,
the corners of your mouth curled in that clownish dogsmile,
and then, how you barked at the manatee
and tried to sniff its nose
and you almost touched it
before the goofy hippies on their inner tube
spooked it and it submerged into the green depths ...
