I arrived at the lake @7:30 am, for the New Years Day Polar Plunge. As I stood outside my truck, undressing 'slowly' down to my jean shorts, exchanging friendly banter with other 'polars..... But,I could'nt ignore my internal thoughts of :" I may not do this, I hate cold, and after all; with my heart condition I could have a heart attack if I do this!!"........'Why did I, say "yes' I would do this?' YES!....my rationale was running, in full gear.....
As I walked towards the lake with two friends. I started to feel underdressed for the occasion. Most Men, and Women were in some form of costume...I seen a couple dressed as matching penguins, a guy dressed as Sponge Bob Square Ice Cube, and a few dressed in their New Years Eve attire, accessorized with their festive attitude and drink from the night before. My favorites ; the Women who boldly chose to wear thong bikinis..... .....My least favorite; the Men who also wore thong bikinis! .........................
I reached the shores edge. I invited my toes to 'test the waters'........... Sh*t!!! it was colder than I imagined, I had heard earlier, the water temp. was 34 degees, and the air temp was a balmy 23.......... My thoughts of; turning back, were interrupted by a lady on a megaphone calling "All Polars, to the lakes edge, We growl in 2 minutes!"....................................
At this point, I decide to do, what I always do, when indicision occurs. "I rationalize; I've went to far to turn back now!.......So, I turn my thoughts to ; what is best approach to this. Do I ease in, dreading each on comming step,or do I dive in and take it all at once ........
The signal to growl (enter the water) came....I hesitated,I heard screams laughter, and splashes!!...............With that I remember a passing thought, of mine 'Screw it!!"...........and I dove in, taking it all at once....................
The shock to my senses, and the adernerline surge I felt, I can only compare to that, of; what I have felt in a automobile accident, and my "BODY PARTS" felt as if they were missing after what seemed like an hour but, in reality was 10 seconds. I'm not gona lie. I did'nt swim the farthest or stay in the longest, I probably was in the first group to get out ! lol...... I swam out about twenty yards, and then swam very fast back to shore!! I could have given Mike Phelps a good go! lol not!!!.......
I hit shore grapped my towel sprinted towards my truck, teeth chattering, body parts blue and numb! I swear I was out of my jean shorts before I even got to my truck! Someone got a good view, lol.....I dove into the truck!!! hmmmmm!! it was soooo WARM!!! I did have the fore thought, to keep the truck, and heat running After about an hour, I came back to "normal" Body parts and all!
So what did I learn...............................
Save the Iceberghs, for the Polar Bears .....................Winter water is; electrically COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
