I Want To Be Different
Have you ever done something just to stand out in front of a crowd? Or perhaps you have done something to stand out for a potential date? Something so out of the blue for you, that it made your own head spin?
Well I have. Why just today I wanted someone to take notice of me. I decided how better to attract the attention of someone than to pick up a book and read to some kids that were gathered in the lobby of the hotel I work at. All just to grab the attention of a dashing young man, whom I thought was the father of one of the children that had gathered in the lobby.
The book I picked up was by Gore Vidal titled “Clouds and Eclipses” the jest of the book concerns a minister, who's being blackmailed for a sexual indiscretion with a teen-age girl, and his young nephew, who bears witness to the old man's fiery penance.
Yes that’s what I thought…..I can’t read this to kids whom ages I guessed at being around six or seven. Much less at work. Regardless, I was already seated book in hand and having loudly proclaimed to the children that it was now story time.
The young man who’s attention I sought, turned his head in my direction and smiled. He glanced at the book in my hand and grinned. He took a seat with the children and waited patiently for me to begin reading.
So I did. Rather I pretended to read. I made up a story along the lines of a dragon flying through the clouds looking for his lost brother. I am not sure how the story went anymore, but the children were captivated. Pointing and referring to the books cover, which had fluffy clouds displayed. The story took a mere thirty minutes, but to me an eternity.
Once the children disbursed, the young man walked up to me and asked for his book back. I was stunned, embarrassed and speechless all at the same time. He took the book from my hand and politely said “ I need to read this book again, I seemed to have missed a part”.
I laughed, he smiled and he invited me to a cup of coffee on my lunch break. I accepted. It was then that I learned he did not have children, he was merely asking some of the kids if they had seen a book laying around in the lobby. We shared a few more laughs and I found out he was an airline pilot out of Hawaii and he was catching the afternoon flight home.
It was a brief encounter, one I will not so soon forget. I made a new friend, who visit’s the hotel once a week on his return flight. I am looking forward to another story time.
