If he were still alive, songwriter Peter Allen would be celebrating his 65th birthday today. Maybe the name Peter Allen (02/10/1944 - 06/18/1992) doesn't 'ring a bell with you' but I think you have heard others singing his music. Here are some of this notable hit songs:
"Don't Cry Out Loud," recorded by Melissa Manchester, "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love," recorded by Rita Coolidge, "I Go to Rio," recorded by the group Pablo Cruise.
Allen scored his biggest success with the song "I Honestly Love You," He co-wrote it with Jeff Barry. Olivia Newton-John recorded it in 1974.
Allen had a short-lived marriage to Liza Minnelli that ended in divorce.
(according to Wiki) "He co-wrote the song "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Christopher Cross, for Minnelli's 1980 movie Arthur. Cross's version of the song reached number one in the U.S., and the songwriters won an Academy Award for Best Song. He actually wrote one line for the whole song: "When you get caught between the moon and New York City" from an earlier song that he and Bayer Sager co-wrote."
Allen died from AIDS-related throat cancer...
I have posted a Peter Allen video of >>> I GO TO RIO <<< in the video section. Let's celebrate Peter's birthday with 'Rio' an upbeat song to remember him today.
