This past week has probably been hell for the technicians/staff at Matchdoctor. Error messages, glitches, system reset messages, pages not coming up, photos unavailable and the like have been plaguing the website we frequently visit. Just look at the numbers of members online. Usage is down... not only by the long-time members, but spam is down too! In the beginning, I (like many members here) got annoyed with the system problems... now, it's becoming 'normal' to click several times to see a page show up on the screen.
I'm looking at this from the bright side...
Maybe it's a polite reminder "we all need to be doing something else in life and not 'hanging out here' quite so often."
For me, the company I work for suddenly got a surge of work to bid on. It seems people are 'putting their feelers out' and getting prices, hopefully to do some construction. This is good and though we have fears of depression, having new projects to bid shows there is some activity to the local economy. Our business has changed. Most of the places I have worked at did 95% new construction and 5% renovation. Now, the numbers have nearly reversed. We have started on a project in South Miami. Although, it's considered a renovation. The contractor is taking a 60 year old 2 bedroom, 1 bath house and making it into a 2-story, 5 bedroom, 6 bathroom house with a 3 car garage, studio, pool and outside BBQ. What an undertaking. Nearly all of the original house was demolished to make way for the new house. Why not completely demolish the original house? Taxes. You can cut down an old house leaving the slab and 1 original wall and still call it a renovation. This allows you to reap tax benefits that a new home construction bears. Renovations are on the rise and new home construction is down.
Here I am on a Sunday afternoon in the office. I'll be here a few hours to start another bid. This one is for a total home renovation and they want our quotation for new cabinets, millwork, outside patio decks around the pool.
On an interesting note. The woodshop is due West from the Hollywood Beach, a place locally famous for their 'boardwalk' and beach. As long as I can remember, small airplanes fly up and down the coast pulling banners. The airport that they takeoff from is based in West Hollywood. While I got out of my car to enter the office, I could hear the sound of a single engine plane (carrying a banner) on it's way to the beach. The weather here is sunny and absolutely gorgeous. So, my incentive is to get some work done and get out to enjoy life away from work!
