If you wouldn't admit it, the host would hang up on you !!

One of Tampa's most popular Saturday night radio talk shows had that name, Desperate and Dateless. It had a large following among people sitting at home on a Saturday night, both those hoping to find a match on the show, and those listening to the banter of the host and the romance seekers.

Like AA, you had to admit it right off the bat when you called in to the show, and then the Moderator would move right to the main points.

How much do you weigh? How hard on the eyes are you? What are your best features? Are you too picky, or are you willing to date someone about on a par with yourself? After about two minutes of that, the caller hung up, and other dateless and desperate listeners would call to propose a meeting with the first caller. They had to 'fess up too, and talk honestly and openly about themselves. Then, the first caller made her/his choice of prospective suitors, to the delight or dismay of the other listeners..

It worked ! I recall it started about 9:00 PM. and by the end of the show about 11:00 PM, most of the callers were matched up with someone. The quality of the match was not assured, but happy and hopeful had replaced desperate and dateless. There was, as my Mom used to say, a lid for every pot.

I think it worked because people had to drop ther feigned indifference to be on the show, and because the host, a woman, knew how to find the right questions to get a caller to be both honest and attractive.

There may be a lesson for some of us here at MD in this, but I leave you to find it for yourself. But I ask those who consider posting:

Are you Desperate and Dateless?

I think that's a wonderful idea to match people up by a radio show.

Back when I was in my 20s there was a magazine called Connecticut Singles, although it wasn't anything live on the radio it had the same premise, you could not see who you were about to date, just what they wrote about themselves in their profile and the town they were from. As far as I know that magazine no longer exists but back then it was like the bible of dating lol.

Hey, Stern used to run Lesbian Dial-A-Date! Does that count?

Ah well, like Chris Rick says, you're either married and bored, or single and lonely!

Sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe I could catch a honey using this method.

I'm with Paula...very much dateless, more so not desperate!
And as much as there is a lid for every pot there is an ass for every seat.

By all accounts a great blog, ttom!
