Being self critical is a good thing, of course only if it is felt in a positive way.

My birthday was celebrated whilst my parents were here which was nice, a steak dinner with cocktails and a good bottle of merlot were shared by all and thoroughly enjoyed.

When Gregg asked me what I’d like for a present, I said I’d like to go on an art course. He raised his eyebrows and asked ‘But why? You can already draw!”
I replied that I felt there is always room for improvement in anything that we do, no matter how good we are.

The lady came to our house with all the details of the course, how it works and what I would expect in the following months. The magazine showed artists drawings that they had submitted in the beginning, and the piece of work that was offered as their final exam.
Wow what a difference! Stick men were now beautifully drawn pieces of art, full faces with shading and texture, simple drawings were now expertly drawn with so much detail and content.

She asked me to give her a drawing I had recently done to take back to the school to submit as my ‘before’ drawing. She too raised her eyebrows and asked “And you think you need to learn how to draw?”
I smiled and thanked her, but went on to say that I felt I could learn more, I want to be the best I can be.

I remember my Dad saying when I saw him watching a builders program and I had asked why he was watching it as he was already a great architect and builder… “There’s always something more we can learn, we go on learning all the time.”

Each of us has a gift, some have no idea what that gift is, a yet to be discovered God given gift that we can improve upon. Finding it isn’t always easy it’s true, but I’m sure we’ve all heard someone if not ourselves say.. “I didn’t know I could do that!”
We all have a natural understanding about something, whether its math, people, art, craft, buildings, animals. Some people just look at something and understand it.

To think that we know all we need to know however, is only denying ourselves growth and the ability of further improvement. There will always be someone with a different idea, another way of doing or looking at things that we can learn from.
Even top chefs enjoy learning from other chefs who have a new idea of how to cook something or another way of combining herbs and spices for that different and new flavour. Dressmakers, engineers, crafts men and women, animal trainers and veterinarians, psychiatrists and doctors all continue to learn from others even after they know the basic skills, they continue to grow and improve all the time.

I have already submitted my first drawing to the school, a simple cartoon drawing of a cat, it will be graded and sent back with my next assignment.

For me to be so vain as to think I do not need to learn more, would only hinder my ability to improve, to gain more information, to grow.

How ever good we think we are at something, no matter how much we have already learnt, there is always room to learn more, and there is always someone out there with knowledge different than our own that can help us to achieve our goals and dreams, no matter what they are.

We should always allow ourselves the opportunity to blossom and grow, to use our God given gifts to achieve for ourselves, to use every piece of talent, moving ever forward, continually learning to become……...........................

Happy birthday Charli. You are so right, there is always room for improvement in anything we do. I took oil painting classes for years and I was good at it, but there was always room for improvement. Your art work is very good, but I am looking forward to see what you submit after you are done. Good luck and have fun.

This is a beautiful blog. I feel it's not just about learning a skill but learning about life in general. As long as we live there is always something to learn.
