Inspirational quote:
One thing to remember is to talk to the animals. If you do, they will talk back to you. But if you don't talk to the animals, they won't talk back to you, then you won't understand, and when you don't understand you will fear and when you fear you will destroy the animals, and if you destroy the animals, you will destroy yourself. -- Chief Dan George

They are now slaughtering horses for sale in meat shops. There is a link I will post here that anyone interested or willing to save these beautiful animals can use to write to a message to President Obama urging him to sign a House Bill to stop this inhumane act toward a beautiful animal who dedicated most of its existence toward helping us. They were first and foremost our means of transportation in this country’s inception before the invention of automobiles. They were our steadfast and strong colleagues when our troops battled in civil wars, etc. – to treat these noble and beautiful animals as if they were just meat is ridiculous. So I am making an appeal to each of you to please go to the link and sign the appeal to the president.

The second link is to thank the rescue team that went in and saved animals that were being abused in a puppy mill...

TAKE ACTION ON ASPCA PETITIONS
--PROTECT HORSES: Sign a letter to President Obama asking him to urge Congress to support the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act.

End Equine Cruelty Petition

--SAY THANKS FOR PUPPY MILL RESCUE: Sign a thank-you card for the Sheriff's Department of White County, TN: They recently rescued more than 250 dogs from a local puppy mill.
Thank you

and lastly... I never knew about this procedure used in Tennessee Walkers competitions.. called soring... it makes me sick:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Humane Society of the United States Debuts New Video on Abuse of Tennessee Walking Horses

(March 23, 2009) — The Humane Society of the United States presented a new video exposing the cruel practice of soring at the second annual Sound Horse Conference in Gainesville, Fla. over the weekend, and hopes attendees will use the video to bring further awareness to soring as it's used in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry.

Soring is the intentional infliction of pain to a horse’s feet, using caustic chemicals and metal chains, which produce an exaggerated, high stepping gait. Tennessee Walking Horses and other related breeds, prized for their distinctive gait and willing natures, have long been victims of this cruel practice.

Soring is so cruel that in 1970, Congress passed the Horse Protection Act and gave the U.S. Department of Agriculture authority to inspect horses at horse shows, sales and exhibitions for signs of soring, and prosecute individuals found in violation of the law. However, enforcement of state and federal anti-soring laws has been thwarted by political pressure from industry insiders, allowing the practice to persist on a widespread basis.
“This deliberate infliction of pain upon these defenseless creatures is blatant animal cruelty. It is brutality in the name of entertainment—opposed by horse advocates and many responsible leaders in the industry—and it must be brought to an end,” said Keith Dane, The HSUS’ director of equine protection. “This new video will inform the public, the media and members of Congress of this inhumane practice and put violators on notice that their criminal abuse of horses will be exposed.”

USDA representatives also presented at the conference, and shared the agency’s plans to step up their enforcement of the Horse Protection Act this year.

World-renowned natural horsemanship leaders Pat Parelli and Robert Miller, DVM, delivered the keynote presentation, “Humane Trends Impacting the Horse Industry” to the audience of more than 100 people.

About The HSUS' anti-soring efforts: In 2008, The HSUS founded the Alliance to End Soring with other animal welfare organizations and horse industry groups, including The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Animal Welfare Institute, FOSH and the Horse Protection Commission. To date, the Alliance has grown to include 24 member groups from around the United States.

The Alliance works with the USDA, Congress and Tennessee Walking Horse industry stakeholders to advocate for strengthened enforcement of the Horse Protection Act and raise public awareness of the pervasive use of soring in the industry.

Horsemeat has been on the platters in parts of Europe for years. It costs a lot of money to feed and clothe a horse and according to some farmers, even horse people, taking them to slaughter is better than putting them down. I've tasted the meat and it's not bad. It's leaner than Bovine. Your argument is mostly cultural and if times get tough, I mean really tough, you too may be selling horsemeat to survive. Beats eating dogs.

Cows are sacred in the Hindu religion. I hope they don't try to come over here and tell us what we can, or cannot eat.

.....a beautiful animal who dedicated most of its existence toward helping us

Hmmm...... I never realized they had any choice in the matter.....

You're not going to like this comment, but....the horse market has gone in the dumper...a horse that would have a value of $2,000 two years ago wouldn't fetch $100 now. One of the reasons that Horse slaughter houses are doing so well is that they will pay more for a horse as a food product than horse lovers will pay to buy it.

I am a horse lover as all of you know and you might not like what I have to say either. But there is another side. The old and hurt horses like ones killed on the highways, or injured have to go somewhere. The United States passed a law a few years back closing the rendering plants making them travel to either Canada or Mexico. So, they were hauled long hours in trucks in the freezing cold. Some arrived frozen to death, still standing on their feet. Many were injured and sick on the way. Do you not think these animals suffered? I feel that they should have rendering plants available for us in the United States to take old and injured animals to or foals that die lets say at birth to instead of having to make them travel these horrible distances perhaps with a broken leg and make the animals suffer more pain. They should regulate them more humanly like they slaughter cows or pigs, as this is a fact of life. All horses die at some point, and allowing them as a food to me is fine, even though I do love my horses, there time on earth is over. I keep a snippet of their mane or tail as their soul if they have one moves on as in people, their body is just a vehicle while on earth. Take care Lost

Where do people find it in his or her heart to commit such inhuman acts?

Animals give unconditional love and have many humans beat!

It tears my heart out going to the animal shelter to try to find my cat of 17 years who is missing. I leave in tears, wishing I could take every animal home or that every animal could be provided with a good home.

Horses are beautiful animals and one of God's gifts to us.

All animals need to be treated with repect. They feed us, clothe us and give love as pets and companions. Any unecessary cruelty should never be tolerated in any society. Unfortunately there are people who feel entitled to treat animals any way they want too and those people should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Please listen.. this blog was not a blog for those that feel that the practice of slaughtering horses that are not old, not in poor health, not a threat to anyone or anything is about. While I do not agree that horse meat has it's place anywhere in this world, I will say that if the horse has been abused, is old and somehow facing certain death because of health issues, while I do NOT condone it, I would rather see that carcass, once the animal has been put down humanely, used in dog food. However, I could have used the links to the youtube videos of how inhumanely these magnificent animals are being butchered.

I am simply saying that you have a right to your feelings and if you feel a certain way, then please, by all means, do what you feel is necessary to defend it... that is exactly what I did with this blog, and I do not recall forcing anyone to sign the petition.. I asked those that love the animals as I do, IF they FELT the need to respond to please do so.

To all others that feel this is fine. That is not a problem with me. I would rather you never invite me to dinner as that may be what you are serving, and rather than be impolite and refuse to eat, I would simply rather refrain from any place that would serve same.

The practice of killing any animal that is not raised for such reason, makes ME (not asking or saying anyone else should feel this way) uneasy and saddens ME.

Thank each of you for your insightful remarks and comments and may God, Tanunshilla, Allah, The Father or whomever you believe in be with you.
