Yes, sir, I'm trying to do my part.
I've been shopping for a new grill. You know, the kind you put in your back yard to cook on. Some people say they "barbecue on the grill," but here in the south we say we "cook out on the grill." Barbecue is, after all, a food group unto itself.
I know there are great varying opinions on what sort of grill one should use. I read cookie's blog the other day about his new charcoal grill. I do love the flavor that cooking on charcoal imparts on the food, but myself, I just am not interested in the time & effort it takes to do it. I prefer a gas grill. When I'm ready to cook, I'm ready to cook. I love to just flip that switch & crank it up....I don't have the patience to wait for the coals to get right. I don't like messing with the spent coals, either. I may look at that differently if I weren't preparing the meal all by myself...but that's another story.
It's been over 10 years since I purchased my last gas grill. It's definitely seen its better days....especially since we moved out here to the country. I used to keep it in the garage & pull it out onto the drive way to cook when we lived in town. Out here, it sits out all season, covered up of course. Since we've been here, storms have come up & blown it over a couple of times. I might could eek one more season out of it, but really, we need to stimulate the economy!
I've narrowed my search down to two different grills. It's just a matter of making a decision on which one. I plan to go back within the next couple of weeks & get it.
I've sort of been wanting a new vehicle, too. I've been driving suv's for the past 14 years or so. I've gotten tired of it. I've gotten tired of the gas mileage, too. My 2002 GMC Envoy averages 17.9mpg. It was killing me when gas was up around 4 bucks a gallon! Thank goodness gas prices came down...but they are going up again....has anyone noticed?
A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon the Volvo dealership over in Raleigh....we don't have one here where I live. I noticed some very nice vehicles on their lot with excellent prices posted on them. Mom & I rode over this past Monday & had a look around. Turns out, these were 2007 automobiles that had never been titled. The dealership had used them as "loaners" when customers brought their vehicles in for service. Some had mileage as low as 7500 miles. Not only did they take the depreciation out of the price, they had discounted them even more....trying to stimulate some sales. Imagine that.
I was looking at the S40 & S60 model sedans. The S40 was entirely too small. Keep in mind, I take my mother & elderly grandmother around with me a lot. The S60 suited me much better. Mom, however spotted an S80 & when we took it out for a spin, she liked it much better. Long story short, I left a deposit on the car & went back on Friday & picked it up. I drove it home & parked it & it's just been sitting there since. It's a beautiful black car with tan leather interior. I always wanted a black car....now I need someone to keep it clean for me!
Anyone want to buy a 2002 white GMC Envoy? I hope I don't have too hard of a time selling it. Wish me luck, as I've done my part of stimulating the economy.

I have my own cooking out system, based on a cast iron grill.
I pick up all the sticks that have fallen out of the tree since the last ime I cooked out, break them to 10 " pieces, and stack them all on the cooker, all that will fit. A liberal doussing with outdated outboard gas mix, and a thrown match starts the fire off with a whoossh, frequently trimming my mustache in the process.
When it burnss down to coals, I place the grate, on goes the food. When the food is done, the remaining charcoal gets dumped into a bucket of water, and poured into a wire basket to dry. Later, this will fuel my blacksmith's forge.
I get a clean yard, hot food, forge fuel, and no hits to the wallet.
Other than the occasional loss of eyebrows, the system works perfectly.

ttom....remind me to start my own fires... :). I love my gas grill, I'm with you...when I want to cook outside I don't want to sit around and wait for coals to warm up. I do have a bag of charcoal sitting in the garage from several years ago...the grill has long since been dismantled....I guess I could use it in my firepit....Tom....can I borrow some Gas?
Enjoy the new car, I'm thinking about shopping for a new house myself...real estate is a bargin (or what it should cost) right now.

Hey, missliss! If I were to use a grill at all anymore, it would be a gas grill. I did one summer several years ago while camping out. I liked the fact that I could even make my coffee on it, and it was pretty darn good........grounds and all. I try to avoid any grills anymore. I'm kind of a danger to myself.........and to Society, in general, around them. I sure miss the taste of the food from them though. I have to say that I do like the taste better from the charcoal grill. I would just never operate one myself.
A new car......YIPPEE!!! I always wanted a navy blue SUV. I've since given up wanting an SUV at all.......but I'd take a car in the same navy blue color.
Great blog, missliss!

Hey Miss, I think to test that car out, a road trip would be perfect...It's getting very pretty in my neck of the woods......We can park your new BLACK Volvo next to my old RED Camaro and see which one gets dirty fastest... or better yet, we can take turns cruising town ...

My cooking outdoors was put to the test one year when Dad and I invited 12 people to an outdoor barbeque.
The cooking device, was a stone one, Dad built it, it had a high and low grill ledges BUT was only 2 foot wide. On it I cooked Chicken, pork ribs and lastly small fish which in Portugal they call carapau.
Everything was cooked evenly and was piping hot when served..
But as I sat down with sweat on my brow, I declared I wouldnt be doing that again lol
Congrats on the new car!

Congratulations on the new car! And I am sure you will enjoy that new grill when you get it, too.
Me, I have never been a fan of gas/propane grills. I grew up with a dad that was a whiz with cooking over wood, and he taught me well. Most of my life I lived in houses with gas stoves and I use to always say, "If I wanted to cook over gas I would just stick a fork in a piece of meat and hold it over the burner." lol. Now I have an electric stove. My ex-inlaws always cooked over a propane grill and I just couldn't see what they saw in it... it always tasted like it was missing something. I grill more like tom up there.... I live in the woods with lots of hickory trees and a few wild fruit trees. We usually have at least one big ice storm each season (at least we have lately) and/or tornadic storm that knocks down bunches of limbs. I cut them up through the summer and charcoal with them all summer in my combo smoker/grill. But I save my hair and start my fires without the gas, lol. Ohhh, you just can't beat good, smoked, BBQ!!!!
Barbecue is, after all, a food group unto itself. You sure got that right!!! Fun Blog
