How come every time I see your head, I think of a marshmallow? -Unknown
“A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.”-Proverbs 17:22(AB)
We’re in the midst of serious and mostly depressing times. Stress is everywhere you look and you’ll encounter some form of it on a daily basis. It was stress over losing a job and a language barrier that caused a man to kill himself and thirteen other’s in New York. When you’re going through a tumultuous storm in your life there’s times you wish to just escape it for a day. We can’t let these daily stresses take over our minds. As my Bishop said yesterday…it’s only because of the blood of Jesus that we can stand and still smile. I was reminded of that truth this past Friday when I was talking to the owner at a local tailoring shop. She asked me if I had a man in my life and when I told her “not at the moment”….she looked me over and said “well, you look very happy. So whatever you’re doing must be working!” I told her that overall, I’m very happy and I was able to witness to her about the ministries I was involved in for the community. Besides holding steadfast to God’s hand....my other secret to looking as if I have “no stress” is what I call my “marshmallow days.” It seems when someone is going through a trial we want to help them by offering up encouraging words along with the best sermon or book that might help. Those resources are great to draw upon during your most weakest moments but let me also say that everyone needs a day of rest from life’s troubles. Even doctor’s have realized that cancer patients need an escape from reality through a funny movie, comical book or an outing in the city in order to speed their healing and keep them going. Laughter is still the best medicine for the soul.
So for me, I don’t always want to be a deep thinker. Let me be pure marshmallow in my thinking, talking and watching for that day and no tech devices attached to my hip. Oh yeah, bring it on Tom and Jerry!! You may even catch me doing the chicken dance at Target or committing one of “those” top fashion “no-no’s” (like wearing my ‘I Love My Puppy’ pj’s to get bread at the local market). Side note on fashion. (There’s some key points to follow on fashion like wearing the right size…but for the most part you should just wear what you like. Whoever has the “right” to decide when white shouldn’t be worn? I decided a long time ago that I do fashion my way since, after all, I’m flipping the bill for the clothes.) Bottom line, take time for a marshmallow day in your own life. Forgo all the big words, smart books, and movies for that day. When Hell seems to bust wide open in your life…if you can still laugh at something….then honey, you’re on your way to becoming not “just” a survivor but an Overcomer! See you on the other side of the mountain!! (I’ll be the one eating my Peep Marshmallows…rubber ducky yellow ones are my favorite!! ?)
