NOT HAY!!!
The quads (goats) are 5 weeks old today and growing fast. Mischief and Santo are getting more ornery by the day. My hair has grown out some (just below my shoulder) and every chance they get they grab it and start chewing on it! They are just beginning to learn to eat hay and I guess they think my hair is hay. I am trying to keep it up in pony tails as much as I can when I am around them, but when they catch a strand hanging down they get all excited and grab it as quick as they can! A couple of nights ago I was sitting down talking to my bf. Santo kept sneaking up behind me and grabbing my hair. Sometimes he slipped up ever so quietly and "nibbled" ever so gently that I didn't know he was there for a minute. Later when I went to comb my hair, a big chewed off clump came out! Guess I will be getting a hair cut soon.
They are beginning to eat solid foods some, now. At first they just kind of wollered it around in their mouth and spit it out just like a baby does. Then they began to eat a bite now and then. They started out on fruit flavored cheerios. Then I added in broken up graham crackers. Oh how they LOVE their graham crackers!! Their favorite dinner is a graham cracker and a bottle of warm milk. But then they discovered another food that they love. They found the cats' dry food. Mischief nibbles a little on it, but Santo eats all he can get ahold of, of a particular kind anyway. No, my cats aren't at all happy with him! Goats don't eat meat, and if they smell even a trace of it in something they turn their noses up, snarl, and refuse to eat it. I have one that if I give her a sniff of meat she snorts at me. So I'm guessing that that cheap bag of cat food I grabbed one night in a hurry doesn't have meat in it cause several of my goats keep trying to get to it. That high protein grain-based food is great for my baby goats, but guess I better get the cats some real cat food . The quads have been teething for awhile now. They nibble and chew on EVERYTHING just like babies..... everything goes it their mouth . Leaves, sticks, PAPER, you name it. First their sharp little lower front teeth came in. They are like razors for cutting grass and weeds as they graze. Oh how I feel for their poor mamas! Their top, front gum stays bare and smooth. Then they start cutting their very back teeth, the ones they use for chewing. Their favorite thing to "teeth" on for these is my finger!!!! As their jaws are growing stronger I am having to make sure my fingers never get anywhere near their mouth.
They are having a good time now running around the yard and playing with all the other babies. Although Santo is still a little standoffish and often follows me around instead, they have gravitated back to hanging out with the other two quads so long as "mama" isn't around. There are 2 nannies and 2 billies. The other little girl looks so much like Mischief you have to take a second look to see which one it is. She is a snuggler and loves curling up in the sun with her sibs for an afternoon nap. But during playtime she really gets around and enjoys time with all of the new kids. She is pretty active and romps, plays and gets along well with all the other goats. So... you might ask what I have named this little social butterfly? I had a hard time with her because I knew exactly which MD member I wanted to name her after, but the portion of the name I wanted to use I have already given a similar name to one of my cats (which is wild and wooly and gets hollered at often!) I have a cat named Bandit (Which she genuinely earned. I have had a lot of cats in my day but never one that was the thief that this one is.) And I often call her Bandy for short. So I finally decided to call this 4th quad the same thing we so often call her namesake in the forums, and that would simply be ......... Mom
But don't think the naming of my new kids stops here. I have 6 nannies that have kidded so far this year (one won't kid for awhile still). Out of that 6 there were a total of 14 babies! One baby mysteriously disappeared, but ALL were born alive and well (with the exception of Santo who you would never know now had a difficult start). So there are 13 little ones running around to be named.
Stay tuned...... more to come........ And thank you for reading my blog.
