My son, Durron, came over for Easter Dinner. It was a joy to cook for him again. It seems I only do so on Holidays anymore. I thought about actually making the ham on Saturday night and peeling the potatoes to have them ready to just turn on on Sunday, but I didn't. Dinner was planned to be ready between 2 and 3, so I had plenty of time on Sunday to do everything. We decided that I would not make a dessert of any kind. There just would have been far too much to eat already. So in lieu of making any dessert, I picked up one bag of Easter candy for us. It was a bag of miniature Reese's Peanut Butter Cups individually wrapped in all the pretty pastel colors of the Easter holiday.
When I got home from shopping for the dinner on Saturday night, I put everything away....except for that bag of candy. I left that sitting on the counter by my coffee pot. I spent most of the evening on the computer back here, but I would go out and get a cup of coffee when the desire struck me. After making several trips out into the kitchen for coffee, I noticed each time that the bag of candy was still there, just where I had left it. I poured my coffee, and then.........I started having a desire of a different kind. I picked up the bag and decided to open it and just SNIFF it! I figured those darn bags are pretty tough to open, and I'd give it a yank......it wouldn't open....and then I would proceed to throw it back onto the counter and just forget about it. Wouldn't you just know it. The dang thing opened with very little effort on my part. I was shocked! I brought the bag up to my nose and took a very long, deep sniff. Needless to say, before that air even escaped my nostrils, I had one of those pretty pastel colored little packages in my hand, ripping at the foil. I just wanted a little chocolate. I figured I'd just suck the chocolate off and spit the peanut butter part of it out. But no..................I ate the whole thing, savoring every bit of it. The next thing I knew, my hand was in the bag again.........this time for TWO of them. I also ate them. I grabbed my cup of coffee and a handful of the cups......five of them.......and headed back here to the computer room. I ate them all. They tasted pretty darn good, too. I could barely concentrate on what I was doing on the computer, thinking about those.....................things. But I managed to drink my coffee leisurely and get something done.
Oh oh! It was time for another cup of coffee. Oh, goodie! I saw visions of pretty pastel colors dancing in my head. Back out to the kitchen I headed for coffee and just a FEW MORE of the cups. I really did think about throwing them in the freezer at that time, but.........yummy! They're just as good and perhaps even better when frozen. I would have had to have buried them REALLY, REALLY DEEP! The freezer just is not that deep. I grabbed four more and a cup of coffee. This time, however, I did throw the bag further back on that counter. It helped. I didn't eat any more of them Saturday night.
I got up Sunday morning and made a pot of coffee. While I was pouring the water in for the coffee, I noticed that bag sitting there. Okay.........I had three of the cups for breakfast. They are miniature, after all. It didn't look like there were very many left, though. I hadn't eaten all that many of them, had I?
Durron arrived at around 12:45 p.m. I turned the potatoes on to cook for mashed potatoes when he came, so dinner would be ready at around 2:00 p.m. I was pouring him a second cup of coffee when I noticed 'the bag'. I picked it up and told him that because I didn't make a dessert for us, I bought us a bag of candy to share. He started laughing! I said, "What! I ate mine. The rest are yours!" He was laughing so hard, he could hardly speak. I told him, "You know, Durron. It isn't like that 'bag' was full! It's lucky nowadays to get a bag that's three-quarters full!" It's no use trying to explain things to a guy.......including my son. The more I said, the harder he laughed. He even had tears streaming down his face.........especially when I told him that I just meant to sniff them. I added that I should have run down into the basement and put them into the freezer down there. They would have been safe. Then again, I probably would have forgotten to go down and get them on Easter at all. So............eventually I would have found my way to them anyway.
I was busy putting the final touches on dinner, and Durron was busy.........eating the cups. He told me it wouldn't interfere with his eating dinner, and he was right about that. After dinner, we had a nice long visit. It was really pleasant. He hasn't spent that much time here since......hmmmmmm.....Christmas. I packed him containers full of goodies to take home with him, including what was left of the cups. He offered me some, but I told him, "NOOOOOOO! Quite frankly, I thought they tasted a little stale." What! More laughter? He said, "And how many did you eat before you thought they tasted a little stale, Mom?" I just replied, "A few......but I ate some anyway." He thought they tasted really good........and fresh!
I'm thinking right now that I wish I had a couple of those quite stale pretty pastel wrapped Reese's Peanut Butter Cups about now.............but I don't.......(sigh, sigh).
Have yourselves a splendid evening! I'm just glad it's almost bedtime. I hope I can get my mind of 'that bag' and be able to sleep.
