I was watching the news as I always do each morning and it's been decided to reveal some of our CIA secrets to the public. So I am wondering what good will this do and what purpose will this serve our Country at this time of turmoil or anytime for that matter? With problems of Homeland Security and threats against our country as it is and more important things to be done, why is it this Administration is concentrating on giving up secrets of the CIA? I would think this would be about the last thing on their "to-do" list if EVer. I know other countries along with terrorists watch our news channels and everything our Government releases, so why would they undermine the CIA by revealing their secrets, I don't understand. If the Gov't wants to be transparent why not start with the stimulus package? Lost

We are not a country of torture. However, the Bush administration took our country down a path that was overwhelming un-American. Now, it's time to fess up to what was obvious all along but covered up with lies and deceit. It's time to make amends and that means exposing the a ss holes who did this. I'm for putting them on trial for war crimes. It will be good for the world to see that real Americans care about values and that torture is unacceptable. Obama was voted in with an overwhelming majority. The people that voted him in want change and this is all a part of it. No more torture and be accountable for your actions.

As to the transparency bit, you want transparency now but why didn't you want it before the economy crashed? Why didn't you question the outrageous lack of transparency while America was being sucked dry by the previous administration? Seems a bit of either hypocrisy or that of being a sore loser to me. Get over it. McCain lost. Come up with a better idea, a real way to fix the huge mess or shut up. So far I see nothing on "your" side except whining.

Are the other countries the going to stop beheading American's and doing the same as well then? No more torture for Americans? Are these the only secrets that are going to be revealed? And is this the time, Obama wants to again show the world how America is an embarrassment? Is that his purpose along with his speech on how he thinks we are arrogant? I'm thinking this path isn't heading in the right direction, we are not getting much support here from other countries as the summit showed. Diverting attention from how much he is spending just isn't going to work. Lost

I had no problem with transparency with the previous Administration either, they certainly played their part in this mess, I do not deny it. There isn't any side to it. Lost

That has nothing to do with it. We don't have to lower ourselves to their level. WE HAVE VALUES. We can win without torture.

The whole world knew we were torturing so what's the big deal?

Admission of guilt, in this case, is a good step. People respect those who admit guilt and respect the idea that we do not condone torture. Our reputation was practically ruined by Bush. Obama is trying to repair the devastating damage done by those who should be tried for war crimes.

I understand what you are saying, however, what each administration describes as a "war crime" changes. for example, it is now being discussed if killing those pirates is a crime or murder or even legal. So far, it's board line according to the UN and now new regulations on how to handle the "disposal" of legal shooting of pirates under each circumstance, is under investigation. It could turn out the Navy Seals had no authority to actually kill those three men. Should the Navy Seals be jailed if it's found out they shouldn't have shot those pirates? How would you feel about that? According to the news, the CIA followed orders and all were authorized by their peers and no crimes have been committed so far as we know, and the President did not have to release them, he just offered. This information was classified for a reason, now maybe people's lives might be in jeopardy, is it fair to the ones following orders? This has been happening since way before this administration, Viet Nam torture was way worse under Kennedy, lets not just blame Bush, torture has been here since, probably the beginning of time. I don't agree with it, but my question is, should any CIA reports be given to terrorists, you know they hold no bars and will use them? Lost

One more note, I wonder if those who think it's ok, will have the same attitude when you may someday see an American being tortured using one of the techniques they saw by the revealing of the CIA, on Al Jazeera TV, with a message on the bottom, saying: "Thank you America for showing us the way". Take care Lost

War crimes don't change. I sure haven't heard about anything but praise for the pirate incident. It could be that certain lying conservative spin doctors are trying to equate torture with this pirate thing. However, it's not the truth and no one will believe it.

Bush secretly approved torture and LIED about it. People were appalled. That's a lot different. As to Kennedy...sheesh he made lots of errors but shouldn't we have learned from that? Vietnam was a waste of lives. Bush did not learn anything. But then he was too stupid and was manipulated by idiots who should be shot.

Yes, I agree, but lets us remember the Majority of the house and senate are Democrats, so I guess those are the ones you are speaking of who influenced him eh? I clearly remember the cheers when they won both houses and said things would change and change they did, for the worse if I'm hearing things right. Lost

who influenced him eh?

He was influenced by his ADVISORS ie Rove, Cheney and the rest of the criminally insane. They LIED to Congress. They lied about torture. They lied about the war that cost PRECIOUS AMERICAN LIVES. Give it up Lost. Obama won.

Apr 17 @ 10:34AM
It has nothing to do with who won, and you have strayed from the original blog. However, to put this to rest, the Whole Administration promised results when they won both houses, They are the one's who pass the bills and get results. Duhhh. They are the Government and are suppose to represent Us. Since the majority are Democrats, lets let them share their part of the responsibility here shall we? They made promises when winning both houses that they didn't keep, they promised change, Obama wasn't the first to come up with this word "change", we've heard it before. So no I won't "give it up", they need to put their promises where their mouth is and prove what the Government promises for once. So far I haven't seen an administration keep their promises, including the Bush administration and now Obama hasn't had a very good start either. Many will agree. I went to a Tea Party on the 15th, and there were just as many Democrats there as Republicans and Independents, and many wished they could have changed their vote from Obama. Lost

The President said he was not going to prosecute those involved with "torture" so one simply wonders (as lost did) what is the message behind disclosing previously classified. I'm sure they have a plan, whereas we can only speculate.

Send a message that "torture" will no longer be tolerated? I put the word torture in quotes because I do NOT even begin to put waterboarding or putting a dog collar on a naked man in the same class is beheading, buring alive, firing squads, etc.

Hope that world and public outcry will "pressure" them into prosecuting after all?

I realize that 2 wrongs do not make a "right", but I'm sick of saying we have to play by the rules while terrorists are free to bomb, torture, and murder captured people and then put it on the WWW for all to see.

When I was in school, there were bullys..... as in every school, every time. IF you did not fight back, they made your life a living hell. IF, you DID fight back, they moved on to easier targets.
So hell yes, waterboard them. Get out the jumper cables while you're at it and apply some voltage. Send the message that we will NOT be a target.

Oh..... btw, this isn't sour grapes about the election. I voted for President Bush, but I did not support everything he did. I did not vote for President Obama, but he IS my president and I will support his good decisions and call him to task on what I feel are bad ones.

We are not a country of torture.

Since when are we not a country of torture? This has gone on in every war we have ever fought, as it does in EVERY other country. Kindness ends at the end of the nose! They want to attack our country they get what they deserve and in fact I would advocate even rougher treatment. In the course of my life there have been a number of physical attacks against my person by stupid individuals. The swift justice I dealt out to them did much more damage to their bodies than the so-called torture dished out by the CIA, and guess what? Not one, I repeat not ONE ever came back for more of my justice. Oh, and I am a GENTLE man by nature!!

The Liberal freedom haters in this country feed their empty headed citizens with the false belief that we are a vicious nation if we don't show compassion for those that attack us. Where was the compassion of those that attacked us at the World Trade Center, and the Twin Towers, etc. There was none!!

imlost2 is right so get over it!

We don't have to lower ourselves to their level. WE HAVE VALUES.

You mean we USED to have values! There was a time when countries would mess with America we would kick their ass. Now weak kneed and weak brained liberals have us kissing their ass instead, and apoligizing to them for their attacks on us. When it comes to kick ass or kiss ass I'll pick kick ass every time. I love my freedom that much! At the rate the liberals have us going we will soon be on our knees facing Mecca two or three times a day.

Thank you Slo, that's just what some newscasts are reporting and since we do have some terrorists in this country, they are worried that some families will be targeted once this news gets out to the public. Retaliated against and the whole family killed. This can be a domino affect, and I see no purpose, when it was a direct order from higher ups to begin with. You know there are sleeper cells here just waiting for something to do. rThanks for your comment. Take care Lost

Its just more campaining imo.. the Dems just cant leave Bush alone, its like kids going to the teacher.. "Look what he did!"

whats the matter with them? they won the bloody election, why keep on about this? Surely they should be concentrating on the people uprising about how government wants to spend thier and thier childrens and thier childrens childrens money that wont be paid off for generations.. and over half of it is nothing to do with stimulating the economy!!

As for the torture itself, I'd like anyone to look me in the eye and say they wouldnt torture someone who knew who was responsible and thier whereabouts after they killed a loved one.. a brother.. sister daughter etc..

The people who were killed in 9/11 were all loved ones of somebodys. If I knew that someone had any information about any of those barstewards I'd hope they'd torture the bloody truth out of them thats for sure.

Oh no wait.. we have values.. so we just say.. "You dont wanna tell? ok then.. bye. have a nice day".. "oh and you wont do that again now will you."

Why reveal what the Bush Administration did.
It is simple we are a country of laws and try to set examples. the last administration with the CIA and secret police went above the law, spied on it's people, put people in jail for no reason, and torture. These are against the main stream of this country.

These were the same problems in England, France, Spain etc that made people form this government any way.
For your information, this is not a WHITE country, it is a country of many people with roots from many countries who happened to be of varied colors. So, you have to get over that real quick. For soon you will be a minor race.

If Bush, Cheney, and others of his administration were governors from other countries, they would be up for WAR CRIMES before the world court. This is another reason to get their dirt out front before it becomes a matter for the world court.

Wow, lots of ideas since I left for a few hours, this blog is about the CIA and giving up it's secrets, it's not about the Bush Administration per se' either, these secrets go back farther than that as the news is reporting, so lets get off of the Bush bashing here. This is about telling our "secrets". Now since they are being called secrets, I am assuming so far, they are secrets. Otherwise there would be nothing to tell right? So I am assuming some feel it's ok to disclose the secrets of the CIA of the USA, am I correct here? That is all I am saying pure and simple to our enemies? And is this the correct time with all the threats especially now that we have more against us with the current Pirate situation as they have made us still another target? Let us pray they get no American hostages. Lost

Yep, you sure got that right!
History has shown that appeasement, a fancy word for ass kissing, does not work.
Clinton did nothing when the USS Cole was attacked, Khobar towers bombed or the embassies in Africa were blown up. All resulted in American deaths.
I believe this inaction directly led to the 911 attacks because Billy showed the world we were weak and would tolerate attacks without responding. He also had the chance to kill bin Laden but passed that up too.
Prez Billy was a world class ass kisser and I fear Hilly as Secretary of State is following his lead.

I am just worried with the threats since we killed three Pirates if they get their hands on Any of our Americans, they will not be so kind. This is not the time to prove we will be gentle as I don't think they will be gentle to any hostages they take of ours. If we make promises now, we will have to keep them and they know it, so they can hold this over us when negotiating. But then again, we didn't negotiate, what's worse, torture or just killing them dead? Take care Lost

Secrets should remain secrets.

The news already has over printed and over discussed the
pirate incident. Are they training the next set of pirates
about the mistakes of these? It SURE looks like it to me.

The public and our enemies do not need to know everything.
This country's government should NOT be abetting enemies.

I don't think this was the case here, but it occurred to me.... how many times do we see a news report that credits an "anonymous source" who was not authorized to speak on the subject. Any more it seems like half the stories we see or read or credited thus. I'd be upset if I was in charge.

Oh, I noticed our pacifist has a blog out..... comments will wait, of course. I'll be curious to see if mine make the cut or not.

Part of the reason this has to come out is so the wounds can heal. We lost our way and all of the Moral Authority we had. Sometimes it seems those that can act the worst are the ones that wear Jesus on their sleeves. Could it be they feel it is ok to treat others however they want because they can run to God and get forgiveness?

Whatever happened to the Golden rule? When they tried to blow up the world trade center the FBI was given custody and treated the prisoners fairly. Every single one of them was so stunned by the fair treatment, they gave up the information that made prosecution possible.

The Rove/Cheney whitehouse (yes, I know we "elected" Bush) gave them to the CIA to do with as they pleased. A truly sad thing happened to what used to be a country that stood for justice. We were destroyed from within. For him to open this wound up, and allow some air in will allow healing to begin, but we will be many, many years regaining the status of fairness and justice.

Some will say that when in crisis (like right after 9/11) we should do whatever it takes to get whatever we need. I'd like to take a moment to point out that is pretty short sited.

If my child was lost in a train terminal, and I thought someone had taken her, would it be right to find someone that looked suspicious and torture him to find out where she was? The moment we go there, we become what we are fighting and all hope for us is lost. When she returns from the bathroom, I look like monster. Or the person that took her is escaped because I concentrated my anger and fear on the wrong person.

How many detainees were held for multiple years and then released without ever being charged? 1 would be bad, but there were literally hundreds of people, held without charge, then released.

The golden rule is still in effect and we can still benefit from heeding it. We didn't get useful information from any of those guys after we "waterboarded" them 30 times, as near as can be told from the information available we got nothing from any of them of any real value. What we did do was become that which we were against.

Not only that but we locked them up without charging them, we denied them basic human rights. When you act from a place of fear like that, you don't always act rationally and when you discover later that you were wrong, it is too late to take back the harm you have done.

We mocked our own democracy, we destroyed what we stood for with more vehemence than 100 airplanes could have done. We have laws and a constitution for a purpose, we should follow them in all our doings.
