Friday nights at my house has become a ritual of taking the Little Prince to the skating rink. When he was a little younger, it was all about skating. But now, its a social atmosphere. This particular Friday night, I was a little excited as well. I had a dinner date to meet while the Prince was being entertained. The air conditioner has quit working in my car. If you have ever been in the south, then you know what 95% humidity feels like. You can walk out and cut the air with a knife. I decided to avoid this one intersection that the light takes a while to change. Every city has driving habits that are not observed when there isn't a police car in sight. My light turns green, I watch to my left to make sure all are stopping. As I am crossing the first two lanes of this four lane intersection, I see a pickup coming from the right. I told my son he wasnt going to stop, so I stopped in the median. The woman I was meeting did not see him coming. He never hit the brakes. He broadsided her car. I saw her arms fly up in the air. He is pushing her car sideways a little ways, then her car spins away from the front of his truck. For a moment I thought her car was going to go into the line of traffice I had just crossed in front of, but it can to a stop before she hit any other cars. I sat there for a moment in shock and disbelief. Then I ran over to her car, she was slumped over, her passenger was semi-conscience. I told them help was been called. A man came running up to help now. Her door was totally jammed. He then started asking if anyone had a knife to cut her seat belt, so it would not restrict her breathing. No one around had one so we had to wait for the paramedics. At this point, I walked over to the man driving the pickup. I asked if he was ok, and he said his chest was hurting. I told him he was probably bruised by the airbag. Then he looked at me and said "my light was green, wasnt it". I told him no, that is my car in the median, if I had not seen you running the light, you would have hit me. At this point, he turned and put his head down on the side of his truck. I left the scene to take my son to the skating rink to get him away from the situation. When I returned, they had the women in ambulances. Then I see the coronors truck arrive, the woman had died instantly from blunt force trauma. Now I have received papers to appear in court as a witness of a vechicular homicide. I am very torn on this issue. One one hand, this woman's family lost her suddenly. On the other, I know he didnt wake up that morning and decide he was going to ruin her family's life or his for that matter. I also think about the fact if I had not been paying attention, it could have been us, with him hitting my car on the side my son was sitting. I learned a long time ago, never leave a loved one mad or without telling them you love them. You never know when it will be the last time you have that opportunity.

Thank goodness you were aware enough of your surroundings that you noticed. I'm sorry this happened. I am sorry, too, that you had to witness it. Surely the man did not intend for this to happen...but it's certainly a lesson to be learned from what happened.

This is very sad..many lives ruined on both sides of the incident. From what you said it does sound like a horrible accident, unless he was drinking or under the influence of drugs. if that's the case he should be behind bars for the rest of his life...

Thank God for the wisdom he gave you and for the guardian angels he must have sent to protect the Prince!!! I would hate to have been the man driving the pickup!!! It could have been any of us in a moment of carelessness!!!

How terrible, Thank the heavens you noticed him.
I don't think it is actually homicide and I'm sure it wasn't intentional.......but since he did not pay attention to the traffic light and his surroundings he was the cause of her death. I believe that in most states they would consider it manslaughter because his negligent actions caused a death. I'm sure he will live with that the rest of his life.

That's why they call things "accidents", people aren't always aware of "all" of their surroundings. How many close calls has a person had where they said, oh my I didn't see that car. And there was a near hit. That could be inattentive driving too. It's an accident, it wasn't meant to happen, it wasn't on purpose. So I don't know. Let your heart be your guide in court. And I like the rest am happy you did pay attention and are safe. Take care Lost
