Visitor in the Night
It was a windy night, a stormy night, and cold was winters air when first the old man heard the sound as he sat in his rocking chair.
The sound was of a footstep beyond his cabin door. He strained his ear to listen, but the footstep came no more.
The old man shuddered slightly as he shuffled across the floor. Was someone lurking out there beyond his cabin door?
" Who's there ?" he asked, but not a sound did touch his weakening ear. He quickly set the latch in place, his heart turned cold with fear!
"Perhaps I just imagined what I heard" the old man thought. "they say a mind plays funny tricks when one's alone a lot."
But still, the old man shook with fear, his throat felt strangely tight, and trying for the slightest breath he fought with all his might.
Once again the footstep came, and then a gentle knock. The old man trembled in his chair, too struck with fear to talk.
Then softly, very softly the doorlatch left it's stay. This time the strange intruder was not to go away!
The door swung open with a rush, and through the entrance came, an unseen hand, and the mans last breath ............For DEATH was the strangers name!
