During the Civil Rights Era, the media created a stereotype of the White Southern American that portrayed him or her as rabidly intolerant of people, who happened to have a different skin color or religion than themselves. Neil Young sang, "Southern man, we don't need you anyhow." Lynnard Skynard responded with a better song, Sweet Home Alabama, "Neil Young, we don't need you anyhow."
YES, there really were many, many Southerners during those times, whose words were full of hate, and actions were disgusting. However, there were also many Southerners, whose minds were not full of hate . . . and certainly, it had not always been that way. You have to dig deep into the history books to get the real facts, but they are there.
What you find over and over again is that an aristocrats in the Southeast manipulated the people of lesser means, so that they would blame minority groups for their low standards of living rather than the aristocrats themselves, who created a society of haves and have-nots. In the early 1800s the elite created a stereotype of Africans being sub-human, who were treated legally as children with no rights. However, the antebellum period rarely saw the broad hatred that characterized the early 20th century. The planters did the same thing with the culturally advanced Creek, Choctaw and Cherokee Indians, until they had stolen all their lands to build more cotton plantations. Thereafter, it gradually became okay to be Indian.
These facts may surprise you.
During the Irish Potato Famine, in America only the ports of Charleston and Savannah were open to Irish immigrants. The myth that New York and Boston were engorged with refugees from Ireland is just that, a myth. During that period, all Irish immigrants came to the South, and were quickly assimilated into its White-Black bipolar society as Whites.
During the Civil War, the Confederacy regularly commissioned men from Jewish, Native American and Mexican backgrounds as officers. Some of the South's most famous generals were Native Americans. General Tom Rosser (Choctaw) was the one who pulled off the theft of over 20,000 head of General Grant's cattle and then drove them through Yankee lines to feed Lee's starving troops. Cherokee leader, Stan Watie and Creek leader, Chilly McIntosh, commanded the last Confederate troops in the field. Meanwhile, the North had a policy of not commissioning Jews, Indians, Mexicans or Africans.
Attorney Judah P. Benjamin was the first Jew to serve in a North American cabinet. During the Civil War he served as Attorney General, the Secretary of War and then Secretary of State of the Confederacy. Prior to the Civil War he was the second Jew to serve in the US Senate (after David Yulee of Florida.) He fled to England at the wars end, and later became a Member of Parliament.
What happened was that in 1895 there was a bad Recession in the United States. Southern aristocrats feared the rise of socialism, and so whipped up hatred of all Blacks, Jews and Catholics by poor whites and aging Confederate vetarans. The aristocrats feared that white rural Southerners would join with European-born Catholics and Southern Jews to form labor unions or even vote in socialist governments. They did the same thing again in the 1920s when the boll weevil economically devastated the South. The majority of lynchings, burnings, beatings, you-name-it, in the South occured between 1895 and 1940.
The Crats are trying to do it again. They are financiing paramilitary goon squads filled with beer bellyed, unemployed white boys. This time the official Boogie Men are "illegal aliens." The behind the scene Boogie Men are "gays, lesbians and Socialists." Since Obama was elected, "Socialist" is the new word of choice over "pinko Libural." The word socialist is more likely to inspire violent reaction. The Crats want domestic terrorism as a means of destablizing the current administration.
Only trouble is that most of the Mexican construction workers have gone home because there is no work here . . . AND . . . one of the richest and most influential Republicans in Georgia is openly gay. That leaves a miniscule group of socialists living somewhere . . , no one knows where . . . and dang, aren't they those devils, who believe everyone should have a job and decent medical care?  What is a rabble rouser to do?

You have touched the outlines of the subject of Hate and racism in the south and how it flowed in all directions.
Today you ask a white man why he hates a black man--he cannot really tell you.
However, every time he sees a black man with a white woman--he gets pissed off.
Why
It is simple---Greed and control.
The white man took the Cherokee Indian's land in Georgia for greed of the gold that was found in the hills.
The black man got the name of being a rapist when he was found with a white woman. The wife of the rich went to the slave market to buy the house help---then they did not have the Adult stores--but the women purchased men by the size of their DICK.
That is why the White man hates a black man---have you ever noticed, the size of a black man's DICK is always the question even today.
On the other hand the Black man still hates the white man because of the RAPE of Black girls from age 10 up.
Thew final step in how to get cheap labor and control the White Trash -- Yes White trash ou see it every where even today--un educated--dirty and nasty--and the black man---the KKK was formed to control both.
To me it looks like the white man got the wrong end of the stick here. For the greed continues today and they play the same games.
This was jst an over lay--for slavery was not the cause. Slavery has been around for centuries. So when you here your fellow white man call a black man by the N word---just remember ask him why and note that he is white trash

The story about the Cherokees being chased out of Georgia because there was gold on their lands is repeated over and over, but not exactly true. When gold was discovered in the Upper Chattahoochee River Valley in 1828, the location was right on the eastern edge of the territory that the Federal government had given the Cherokees in 1793. The Cherokees were not indigenous to Georgia, but had moved down to Georgia by the thousands at the close of the Revolutionary War.
Well, the State of Georgia merely redrew the boundaries of the Cherokee Reserve to exclude the gold fields, then evicted the handful of Cherokees who lived there. However, many of the families in the mountains, who trace their ancestry to Cherokees, are a result of Cherokees, who were hired as laborers to work in the mines . . . and therefore, were nowhere around when the soldiers came to round them up INSIDE the Cherokee Reserve.
The primary reason for evicting the Cherokees were the fertile river bottom lands in NW which planters wanted. The Cherokees had hardly left the state before planters from Virginia, South Carolina and coastal Georgia were constructing big mansions along the Etowah River.
