I open up my morning paper to see this headline: "Sonoma couple wins $75.7 million lottery jackpot". I shake my head, I live in Sonoma Co., I bought a $1 ticket, why not me! Then I see the next headline story: "Falling tree kills 5-year-old-boy". Also in Sonoma Co.
]
A pair of Marin County sheriff’s deputies from Sonoma said Tuesday they won’t be rushing back to work after winning $75.7 million in a multi-state lottery.
Brian Cabaud and Anneliese “Liese” Hansen said they would take vacation time to ponder their newfound riches, make a trip to Disneyland and possibly buy a new Volvo.
The beaming couple, who appeared at a lottery news conference in Hayward, also said they would share a bit of their good fortune with the families of four Oakland police officer who were slain in the line of duty in March.
A 5-year-old Glen Ellen boy was killed and his father seriously injured Tuesday when an oak tree snapped off its base and crushed the family’s pickup truck as they were driving home from a donut run. The father is Michael Kirby, a former Sonoma County Sheriff’s deputy who has been with the Marin County Sheriff’s department for about 10 years
Both stories are in the center column Click on MORE to read the tree story and click on the lottery story to read it.
A question popped into my head. If it were possible to bring back that boy would I be willing to give up $75 million? Or even $74 million? I could live on $1 million. These lotteries are crazy, who needs $75 million?? Think about it. If you had the winning ticket but hadn't collected it yet you would still be the same ol' you, not a multi-millionaire, could you live without it to bring back the child of someone you work with? To bring back ANY child? To bring back anyone?

These overinflated lotteries are bs. People need to spread the love around like they do in Spain with their Christmas lottery!

I know what a wonderful person you are! How many people would have even had that thought. Money is nice for security, roof, food, and day to day things. It doesn't buy happiness though.

I have come this far in life without being a millionaire. I could do without it, no doubt....and would. The question then for me would be........$75 million to bring back just one child? Whose child would I choose? I have three sisters who have lost sons and one also lost a baby daughter. I have a cousin who lost a son. I have lost brothers and sisters.......and both my parents. I would definitely be willing to give up the money to bring back any of these......or anybody else's.......if somebody else chose for me the child or person to bring back.
Wonderful write, Gr8!

I would sure in a heart beat, money means very little when it comes to a life. I lost my husband back in 03 and all the money and possessions I have I would gladly give up. What good are they? When I saw him lying there lifeless, he had a pocket full of cash on him, he didn't need it, he didn't need his clothes, he didn't need anything. His spirit had left him, he didn't even need his body anymore. So riches do you no good. I lost my best friend and lover. Life and breath is everything, be happy to wake to a new day. Take care Lost

Awww Gr8! I feel so much what you are saying and I would have thought the same thing. I would of course bring back the child (in this case.) If the child was not gone and I had the choice of anyone, it would for sure be my husband.
All that money would mean nothing anyway without loved ones to share it with!
Thank you for posing such a "heart tugging" question. It makes people look internally at what they truly value.....and that is great!!!
Good blog my friend!!

Thank you all for your comments. It is a hypothetical question that we will never have to answer but it just struck me when I saw that the accident happened at 9:30AM, the father was a retired local sheriff, the lottery #s were picked at about 7PM that night and the winners worked for a local sheriffs dept. and I am sure at that instant, when they won that if they knew about the family losing their boy that morning that they would be willing to give it all up if it could bring the boy back to life. I don't know this for a fact but it is possible and makes the question reasonable...what would be willing to give up? I thought the lottery was a good example. Could I give it all up and just continue to make it pay check to pay check? Would keeping $1 million or 1/2 the money somehow be ok? Could I sleep at night? Also, I wonder if it would be easier to give it up if you know you had won but still not received the money then if you had already won it a couple of weeks before and had bought a new car, new house, went on a trip around the world...
It just got me thinking about if there is a price we can put on life. How much to spend to keep someone who is terminal alive for another week, month, year?? I think I got too deep for myself lol. But thank you for your input and I am sorry for your losses.
