Have you ever noticed that some people think that abnormal is normal?
Most heart attack victims, live their lives in a constant state of flight or fight. Their adrenaline levels are consistantly high placeing great stress on the heart muscle. I believe doctors call them type A personalities. They usually die unexpectantly in their forties of fifties. In their minds, this abnormality is perfectly normal. They go about their daily lives blissfully unaware of the fate that awaits them.
Stress is unavoidable because we need a certain amount of stress in order to survive, however too much stress leads to disease. The question is, how much stress is too much?
What brought this to mind was watching people at the Mall. Many of them I noticed had stressed faces as they scurried about jossiling one another looking for a bargan. I don't think they were even aware of the people around them. Their eyes seemed fixed and their jaws were clenched, much like an animal when it hunts. I thought to myself ...are we really that far from the jungle?
I suppose many of them kick back and relax when they get home, but for others life must seem like an ever increasing treadmill constantly propelling them forward, their eyes constantly fixed on the prize. Each day we are constantly bombared with advertisements urging us to consume more and more stuff that presumably will make us happy never realizing that its killing us. We think its normal.

Less is best. I go to the store with a list. Forget ads, they usually don't have the items promised. Duck and weave, smile and say, "excuse me", than get the hell out of dodge. No stress for me, just get what I need and leave. Helps to know where everything is located that you need. Oh, and if people are blocking the aisle visiting, just ram'em with your cart, they'll move.

Yoga and meditation are a good way to retrain the brain, to get out of a perpetual state of fight or flight that afflicts modern society.

They are probably just stressed about spending money they don't really have...
I need to go get some clothes for summer...but just keep putting it off...I just hate to spend money right now with the economy the way it is, I might need that money next week for food or something important like that.
Then I think, most stores are dropping prices just to get people in the stores...to spend money...maybe I am missing out....hmmmm ...

People just don't seem to THINK before doing anything anymore ... it's a bit like groundhog day ... an endless treadmill of getting up, going to work (or not) and doing whatever everyone else expects us to do. There are too many preconceived ideas ... given the option of giving up work and having to live on less money people go into a spiral of fear because they don't believe for one moment it will be possible ... They're struggling already, how on earth will they cope? I talked to someone the other day who is very stressed, she's the Head of a special school. It used to be what made her heart sing but she's older now, she has less energy, her husband is ill and needs her help ... suddenly it's not the be all and end all. However, she's used to the lifestyle the money allows. After some discussion she admitted she buys things she doesn't need because she's always looking for that something that will make her feel better and justify continuing to work. She's becoming convinced retirement will be a much better option, there is more to life than money.
They are probably just stressed about spending money they don't really have...

Does she really NEED summer clothes or is she just concerned other people will think less of her because she's wearing last years colours or fashions? The summer clothes I'm packing for my trip to Mississippi are at least two summers old ... they're all in good condition and I look lovely in them. I quit buying clothes each season for all of us simply because it's 'what people do' a long time ago ... at first it was necessity ... money was in short supply ... but now I realise I just ended up with more washing and wardrobes full of stuff we rarely wore, if ever!
Thought provoking stuff, Bort!

Can you name any animals that live in the crowded concentrations that many people do? Many of the ills of modern people, including stress, are the normal reaction to the highly abnormal condition of living in such huge population concentrations.
In experiments, overcrowded rats die young, from no apparent cause, and engage in greed, child abuse, sexual perversion, and loss of pairing relationships..
Kudo for a great blog.
