There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart.. .pursue those. Somewhere in my life of reading and holding onto quotes and stories that catch my heart, I came across that quote. I don't remember the author and I don't even remember the place, but that quote has been what I hoped to have taught my children, and how I choose to live my life.
I've worked at the same job for 24 years now. There are times many professionals in the organization (I am an associate) have told me that I am qualified for a higher level, I could easily handle a professional level job. I believe, deep down where I have pushed that voice, I most probably could. But, the extra hours, the extra stress, the extra money are not one of those few things that have hooked my heart.
I have always had this hunger inside of me to devour books and knowledge and am fascinated with what I learn and see. I leave the bigger houses, the fancier cars, the posh nightclubs and restaurants, and the jewels and fine clothes that may, for a fleeting moment capture my eye, for those that wish to pursue them. I guess what it boils down to, and I have had this conversation with both of my children, is that I am a firm believer that life is too great a gift to spend hours, days, weeks, months, years chasing after a better something when the first something that caught the eyes started to lose the glamor, the shine.
My children, now grown, on their own, have jobs to pay bills and are jobs they are most passionate about. Not high paying jobs but jobs they enjoy doing. My jobs were always pursued in that same genre.. something I enjoyed. But my heart is seldom captured by things that others find they need, want, have to have. I watched, after mucking the goats tonite, the hummingbirds dance in the sky .. there were two that were chirping and dancing in and out with each other.. they were pursuing that which captured their hearts.
And I just watched a wonderful movie, which happens to be a true to life movie, called Miracle Run. It was a story about a mother who had twin boys that were autistic. She fought with the education system to keep them in a school, worked with special education teachers to bring them around and because of her love, her belief that they could do anything they set their mind to doing, both boys found those things that captured their hearts. One excelled in acoustic guitar, the other became the fastest cross-country runner in his high school, and they went on to college.
It's not a big secret, but the thing that captured my heart at the ripe ole age of 3 was a pair of big liquid brown eyes, hair that was shining like straw, and legs and and a chest that were rock hard and strong.. I fell deeply, madly in love with my granddad's Belgian work horses and ever since, I made a promise to myself that I would have 2 of my very own horses. Many of the people that I work with look at this place and know how much time I spend cutting and getting the prep work done for 4 years from now, and they think I am foolish, but I have learned that you cannot argue with a heart that has been captivated for as many years as mine has.
I came to this site to hopefully find that one person that would do the same, capture my heart.. so far.. well, let me put it this way.. it hasn't happened yet, but I am positive it will .. most probably not here, but I have an in with those winged birds and fireflies and they have promised me that they will take my wishes to the one that can fulfill them.
Pursue those that capture your heart.. it really is that simple!!!
and for gramps: a plethora just because I wanted to:
The Ant and the Elephant
An ant and an elephant share a night of romance. Next morning the ant wakes up and the elephant is dead.
"Darn!" says the ant. "One night of passion and I spend the rest of my life digging a grave!"
