We are prisoners to technology... in that, we constantly rely on it. When it's not working properly, we suffer. When it's working it's captured us whole. I try to escape technology... but I can do it only for moments at a time. Everything around us is a product of technology. I sleep on a mattress of 'high-tech' foam. My pillow is synthetic 'hypo-allergenic' fiber. There is a digital control on my air conditioner. Breakfast? why sure, touch screen digital controlled microwave oven. My phone has a wakeup alarm. My appointments are stored digitally. It's been years since I've been to the beach... for relaxation. My cellphone is always within arms reach. I contemplated getting a waterproof case for my phone. Oh, great... then I can strap my phone to my body and take it swimming in the ocean. Is that a sick thought... or what?
My blog idea this morning came from chatting with a new friend. I was complaining how the bad side of technology is 'everyone is trying to sell you something' When I try to see an online news story, the first thing they do it make you sit through a commercial. I understand it's advertisers money that makes it all happen, but where is the limit? There seems to be no limit, including companies who have already sold you a product. They have become advertising whores. My best example of this is HP... Hewlett Packard. The same HP company who make computers and printers.
We have a 'new technology' HP printer in the office. It's got a scanner, supports networking and wireless connections. On the front is a display. it shows status, instructions, helps screens are there too. Every morning, when the computer boots up, HP must tell you there is an HP printer connected. You must close the (annoying) window and my browser pops open to take me to their website "just in case" I needed any products/supplies from HP. That's a computer virus by definition.
The part I dislike most is: The way HP advertises products.
While you are printing, they are advertising shit. Their shit. I'm not saying their products are bad... most of their products are really good. A bit more expensive than other comparable brands, but HP printers have been running in many of the places I have worked.. for years.
This new printer has an information screen has become a banner to sell more HP goods and services. In my opinion this is wrong. Maybe great for HP marketing but the kiss of death for me ever wanting to buy any HP products and constantly be reminded of their technology. Sorry, HP, I refuse to become your prisoner.
