I had recently taken my car in to have the winter tires taken off. When this local tire store finished doing it, they told me that my car needed rear brakes and it would cost over 300 dollars. I asked them to wait.
From there I took it to a car repairman that a mutual friend uses. HE told me that both the front AND rear brakes need done and the CVC joint too, for a grand total of about 800 dollars. OH and btw.... he charged me over 200 for a tune up. My car is a 2002 Ford Tauras.
Another friend,... one I have known now for over a year, works for the city water company and that company uses "Fair" and has for over 25 yrs., to service the city vehicles. This friend of mine called him and asked if he would be interested in helping me...and shared with him my situation..
He said "sure" so I went there today and waited while he did took the tires off, and looked at the brakes and the CVC joint. I watched everything he did and he says that the rear brakes do indeed need to be changed but not the front any time soon OR the CVC joint which looks like new!! His quote for the rear brakes? About $125.00!!!!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!! That is something I CAN afford!!! Thanks Mr. FAIR!!!
IT PAYS TO SHOP AROUND!!!

lot of shops take adavantage of women cause they figure they can get by with it.. I'm glad you shopped around.. I do all my own repair, and brake work.. All it cost me is for the parts.. Put new brakes on my 97 truck a few years ago, and it cost me about a hours time, and around $50.00-$60.00 for both the front, and rear brakes.. I would have done your brakes for only a cup of coffee. Yeah I'm cheap, but I don't believe taking advantage of anyone.

I'm sure that there are a lot of dishonest repair shops out there, especially with the economy being what it is. But... there's an old saying that good work isn't always cheap and cheap work isn't always good. After looking at what you started with the rear brakes. I can tell you that you have to look at what was going into the job, if the first shop was doing a complete rear brake job, with hardware, wheel cylinders and flushing the system., that would have been your best option, Especially on a seven year old car, here in America we aren't told of maintance when we purchase a car because they want your car to break so you'll buy another one, and sweety... there's more to maintance than changing the oil:) I recently did a 60K/5 year maintance on my Lincoln and baby.... let me tell you something there's a reason that the American auto-makers don't push regular maintance on their cars. The tune up, parts only cost well over $300.00 so saying that a shop was ripping you off because they charged you over $200.00, tells me that you're not looking for quality work, but some shade tree to patch it as it slowly falls apart under neither you as you putt down the road.

I always go to Autozone and buy lifetime parts, which brakes do fall under in case you didn't know. I've taken them back when they wear out too soon and they've give me a brand new pair for free. They are not that hard to put on and it only costs like $5 to turn the drums depending on where you go. We just did brakes on my son's Taurus and they cost like $29 for front and about the same for the back, it's the labor you paid for. In the future, always call a place like Autozone and find out what the parts cost first and then you can find out what they are charging you for labor. Autozone will also tell you how long it will take to put the part on, at least my guys will here, they are so helpful if you get someone good. Lucky my husband was a mechanic, so I have a good idea about most things, and I do have a good mechanic that works on my vehicles that doesn't rip me off, but like the others said, many will replace parts that don't need it. Especially in today's economy, people need work. Be careful. Take care Lost
