Yeah, I heard that before. I dated a woman who read a lot of 'health' articles about the dangers associated with Coke and cola products. It seems something in the phosphoric acid being the culprit. Phosphoric acid gives Coke it's tangy taste... it's also used as a component in a rust removal product commonly called naval jelly.

I picked up on a Yahoo news story Wednesday Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems and how drinking coke lowers potassium in the bloodstream. Symptoms range from mild weakness to paralysis.

Of the people in this review... some were drinking up to nine liters a day!
That's more than 2 gallons of liquid... per day.
Well sure, that explains why they were complaining of appetite loss, persistent vomiting, and fatigue.
Drinking water might have the same results...

Trust me... you didn't need to spend money to research this.

I'm going to file this in the "All too stupid to believe" category.

It's nearly lunch time. I think I'll have a sandwich and a glass of Coke.

Dang.... I thought it was just because I was getting old!

You can also use coke to help keep drains clear (had a plumber tell me that one) and clean copper (old middle school science project)..

as with everything... too much of anything isn't good for you..

I would have preferred reading an article with more relevant/accurate findings.

Like... what are the effects for 3-5 sodas per day. Two gallons of soda is totally absurd.

I to would like to read the effects of normal amounts drank if any. I do believe daily drinking coke even in moderation isn't good but thats been my experience. Like you I'm thinking what a waste of study or at least not to have told the whole story.

I read this week that Coke was great for fixing scratches on sunglasses AND it keeps bugs off of our plants....seems to me it would attract bees!

I totally agree with your blog. I agree Coke is bad for you, but not as bad as some are saying and I, too, would like to see a reasonable study done. I LOVE Coke, but had to switch to ginger ale, root beer and citrus pops because the coke was giving me SEVERE indigestion. (I also had to quit caffeine after I had my heart attack, but the Coke free does it too.) On the whole, I am trying to go back to drinking more water, but what is coming out of my tap right now is super strong with chlorine smell! And I don't have enough pressure for a filter.

Muscle problems? I just heard that it robs calcium from your body so if you are older and prone to osteoporosis, be aware.

I have a friend who just got out of the hospital today from this very thing ..wed morning she went home from work feeling weak and by afternoon she was shaking so bad that her daughter took her to the ER and they kept her first they thought she was dehydrated and she said that's not possible I drink diet coke all day long .. and the coke was the problem .. too much and it takes all the potassium from your body.

Drinking Diet Coke all day?

Sipping it...right? how much Diet Coke are we talking about here?

60 -80 ounces?

Diet drinks... that's another cause for medical concern.

well I know she drank 3 12oz cans at work and I'm sure she drank more at home she has said that she's drank 6 cans a day .. she was in the hospital a few years back getting dried out from beer .. and she don't drink it anymore but has replaced it with diet coke... probably needs to change to water.

HP... Thanks for the comments and another perspective.

I know water intake is important and varies from individual to individual. I recall many diets suggest eight 8 ounce glasses of water daily. This would seem to be way too much for someone who sits at a desk all day versus someone more active.

I take potassium supplements recommended by my doctor because I'm usually on-the-run and eat a lot of take-out foods which are high in sodium. Many years ago I used to cook for my father who was on a low sodium diet. I don't add salt to my food, but one can of soup can be as high as 1,000mg of sodium. I forget the exact conversion, but it's something like 7 or 8 teaspoons of salt.

The potassium displaces the salt so I probably don't feel the effects of drinking Coke... not that I drink a lot. Maybe 1 glass every other day. If the place serves brewed tea, I'll take that... I dislike fountain and canned tea (except for all natural) because they have a preservative, sodium benzoate.

Never heard about this, and I rarely had coke maybe 1-2 times a year for what I can remember...I just don't like it taste and I found many people who bought diet coke they all not skinny.
My old boss(home health care agency) once told me some people used coke to clean the toilet too.for some reason ..oppp! it's true story...

My favorite water is evian I like to buy when it's on sale.but sometimes if I don't like to pay more I buy other cheaper spring water and purified water not any drinking water.I just like it my way.
I think for health issue water is the best drink....drinking enough water prevent you from some kind of cancer too ,good for the body with no doubts and moisture your skin, i experienced some people who hate to drink water really have very dry skin and easy to be dehydrated .

Well I have a tip, two very old ladies that I tookcare of them 92 and 94 yrO, one liked to drink tomato juice mix with a little bit of vodga just a very small glass , and the other one drinkign red wine a small glass per day.they both said good for their health .But I think only if you have low blood pressure..it might be good for you...but whatever make sure to talk to your doctor first.
anyway ! I'm just a caregiver , it 's only my opinion and what I heard about .
Anythign too much is not good but I won't say it's stupid thing when we are told about it, you will never know..like milk from china,,,remember!?

Okay being reasonable for a moment 2 gallons of anything has to have some kind of effect on you.
And two gallons of soda...well that's a no brainer.
I love coke...really
But even I know that drinking too much is really really bad.
Well.. drinking it at all is not good but hey....we all need our vices [e15

Ok, what I have read in several studies that actually did not really pertain to coke but to sodas is that when you eat or drink ANY thing, to digest it PROPERLY you need certain vitamins and minerals to absorb the nutrients you need to keep the body running appropriately.

When you drink sodas they are very acidic and most people according to the blood type diet NEED to be alkaline. O blood type run quite well acidic so maybe sodas do not damage them the way it does the alkaline people.

Studies claim it leaches calcium from the body. What actually happens is, the sodas contain high levels of phosphorous. To digest that phosphorous you have to have calcium, magnesium and zinc. You NEED those to digest. If you drank just a soda and do not eat high mineral foods and do not take other supplements with it, the phosporic acid being present in your intestines GRABS those minerals from your bones, teeth, muscles and organs and binds to them. Eventually they ALL exit the body in the urine. Why? Because you do not NEED that much phosphorus and the phosporus is BOUND to the other minerals.

Same thing happens with calcium. When you have TOO much calcium being present in the body...it takes the other minerals IT needs to be digested from other areas of the body and steals them. Or instead, it forms calcium deposits in the bones (bone spurs) and the organs (kidney/gallstones etc). And the US has a HIGH calcium diet. And the dental and medical associations BOTH tell you you need lots of calcium.

Well, duh, they don't teach balance or combining so lots of people have severe health issues because of it. They follow the local authority figures and do not question. And guess what? BIG PHARMA (read FDA) wants to control our free will to take the vitamins and minerals we can to correct the problems the big companies create for us that are hand in hand with Medical and Dental misinformation.
