This weekend, my cousin Mike from Virginia Beach will be coming up to begin the process of eliminating & sorting through the belongings of his parents, my aunt & uncle. I was told by my uncle to begin looking through the various areas to see if there were things I wanted. I started in the garage, where my late uncle Orville's 92' Jeep Cherokee has been sitting since shortly after his death in March. The catalytic converter & muffler fell off last Winter after a snowstorm, forcing it's incarceration. 100,876 miles on the odometer.. belongings in the cargo area just as my uncle had left them. The battery was stone cold dead from sitting, & the driver's rear tire was half flat. It had almost a sad look to it, as if it knew it's owner was gone. I pushed it out of the garage until a co-worker came to jump start it. With just a couple revolutions of the starter, the 4.0 liter straight 6 engine came to life.. sounding like a demo car ready to do some damage. Once that was moved out & behind the garage, the trip down memory lane began. I saw items that were once my folks from years ago when I was little... turn style clothes rack, mattress beaters, an old street sign, Wham-O Frisbee horseshoes, lawn jarts with the metal tips, & other items that reminded me of warm, Summer days & cookouts there. In the attic was items that dated back to WW1, pics & belongings that were of / from my great aunts, uncles, & grandparents. The house itself still has a faint smell of pipe tobacco, which my uncle used to smoke in a corncob pipe. I have no doubt that in the days to come next week, that my cousin & I will uncover more amazing things, pieces of the past, & we'll share trips down memory lane. Many things will be discarded.. some will be sold.. others donated to the historical society. In those items, my aunt & uncle's legend will carry on, & I am thankful for having been able to experience what I have with them the past 40 years. Thanks for reading, & have a great evening. *HUGS & FOOTRUBS* ladies.. *HANDSHAKES* guys..

beautiful memories it seems.... Bless you

The house itself still has a faint smell of pipe tobacco, which my uncle used to smoke in a corncob pipe.

After my Dad dies and I got ready to move to Iowa, the last thing I did was go to one of the old tobacco barns next to my house. i went inside, took a deep breath, sat there and cried. All of those memories of my childhood, the good and the bad came flooding back. i knews it would be the last time I smelled the old barn.

Kudos

WSOR...

It is nice that you are able do this...I cannot...My Mom passed in December and I still have only been in her house twice to water the plants...She's still too real...it's as if she's gone for a few days...

I have not ever been known for great courage...and this arena is one of my worst...
