I found a wallet yesterday at work. Now I looked in the wallet for the I.D. and found out who it was. Looked to find a phone number and found nothing. looked in the billfold and there was $40. Now I work loading up vehicles and mostly outside retail. I found the wallet and turned it in. Someone told me, "why didn't you keep the money?"
I said, "there's too many reasons not to so I'm not going to explain it. If you don't understand you've got issues."
Same thing happened Oct. 2 yrs ago. I found a wallet in the parking lot and looked inside and found the I.d. then looked in the billfold. He came from Colorado and had about $1000 I thought in it. The manager after I turned it in told me there was about $3000 in it. When I first found it I was tempted to maybe take about $100-200? But my conscience wouldn't let me do it. I would never, it would bother me knowing I did. So the guy came to the desk after we paged for him. He took his wallet, said thank you then left. Before he left, he told me That I saved his house payment and x-mas because that's why he came down to phoenix. He offered me $10 for turning in the wallet. Now, knowing you got everything back, how cheap is that to offer $10 when you recoverd $3000 which I hate to say it but, lots of people would have pocketed and left the wallet. I'm not saying I wanted a "reward" but how cheap is that? Even if it was all his money still he probably never would have seen any of it again.   I would have offered about $100-300 because I probably would have never seen that money again. Also 4-5 employees told me I was a fool because I didn't keep the money. Now being that lots of employees told me I should have kept it, where's integrity, pride, honesty? Do they still exist?

Yes they do and its pople like you who give them the oxygen they need to continue to be shining beacons to us all
I suspect those that told you that you were a fool for not keeping the money would claim to have very high moral standards Saying is one thing Doing another

He offered me $10 for turning in the wallet. Now, knowing you got everything back, how cheap is that to offer $10 when you recoverd $3000 which I hate to say . . . My children have found lost wallets out in public, have turned them in to the police & always refused to accept any reward, no matter how much. That is Pride. That guy could have had a large housepayment, or maybe saved that money for a long time in order to buy xmas presents.
I applaud you for turning it in, but the reward of doing something good & honest should be enough.

I have a friend that found a money bag in a grocery store cart to the tune of $8,000.00 it was his payroll , she turned it in to the grocery store, left her name. After 3 weeks he called her because his friends shamed him into a simple thank you... so he wanted to take her someplace nice for dinner as a reward, she said , you don't have to do that..Made plans to meet, and the smuck never showed up.
This man is a real ass.

Forget about Money...I often wonder about Honor...Why don't people have it anymore? I mean Honor in your way of being in this life...Helping someone who needs help, giving what you have plenty of to someone who has a dire need for it, understanding others because you are able to put yourself in their shoes...
And most don't even understand what "my Word is my Bond" means...old term, comes from a time when we did what we said we would do...When we stood by our Honor, when we did the Right Thing, because it was right. When we could Trust each other.
You are Not a Fool...You just like me can look into the Mirror and Really Like the Person who is looking back...I not only Enjoy it, that's just who I am. If I don't have Honor, how in the Sam Hill can I expect Anyone Else to have it?
