One of the cabinetmakers at the shop got a little crazy 2 weeks ago that cost him a job.
I got a phone call in the morning asking why I left the factory open. I didn't. Dave has been working there more than 10 years. He has a key to open in the morning, I close the shop at night.
For some unknown reason, Dave went to the shop in the middle of the night, took the 18 foot long box truck to get cigarettes, whacked the truck into a tree branch or something and creased the top of the box, backed the truck into the lot and pulled the rolling gate off it's track. He was not coherent and looked stoned. Arguing with the boss, he fell over. The end result: Dave lost his job.

We hired another cabinetmaker... he started the next day. In this market, too many people are out of work. We get qualified cabinetmakers come by looking for work all the time.

A few days later Dave's wife reported back that Dave had a 'mini-stroke'
It was detected from a CT-scan when he went to the hospital. He's taking medicine to resolve the problem and feeling better.

The new cabinetmaker worked pretty well for a few days and had to go to the hospital... He's 30 pounds overweight and couldn't take the summer heat. This may have caused uncontrolled high blood pressure. He won't be coming back.

Today, Dave came to the shop to pickup his last paycheck and begged for his old job back. He said he 'collected' business cards during the week having made 38 appointments/interviews looking for work. "There's nothing out there" he said.

I had a talk with the boss and Dave will start back tomorrow morning. Although he grumbled a lot, Dave's a hard worker and consistently shows up for work.

The boss made mention of this health concerns and wants to see a Doctor's note allowing him to return to work. That's best for all parties concerned. Until we know more about his recovery, he'll be doing more basic tasks and avoiding cutting large panels on the saw like he did in the past.

letterman never left and is brillant...

chatman...dave's story is why I believe in unions because they help protect a persons job...if dave has been a good and consientious employee for 10 yrs he shoudn't be fired for a problem occuring at work that can be traced to a medical condition. jmo.

The medical condition wasn't known until days after her was dismissed. There were no signs of alcohol so we suspected drugs were the cause of his behavior.

Dave didn't like to sit idle but his personality was to often complain about things. For example, if 2 or 3 cabinetmakers needed to use the big panel saw, they would have to wait and find something else to stay busy with until the saw was available. He would stress-out simply because it broke his chain of thought. He was mentally ready to cut parts and the saw wasn't available.

He got paid by the hour so it wasn't like he was loosing money to wait for the saw. There are always other small projects to do to keep busy.

Last month, Dave was actually toying with the idea of doing some different work or working for another company. You know... the grass in greener syndrome.

All along, we have been telling the employees 'how bad things are out there' and how fortunate we are to actually have work. We may not be turning a profit right now, but we have work on the books.

Do hope he fully recoveres, having been a Union Rep for many years in my experience he should of been suspended on pay while a full investigation had been carried out then and only then can a decision be made. That is what would of happened over here if you were a union member. Unions do have their uses can also work to the benefit of the company as well so they don't get taken to court for wrongful dismissal. Hope it works out for both sides.

He's authorized to open the factory and turn on the fans. Period.
Going there in the middle of the night, taking a truck he's not authorized to use (not considered a driver and not on the truck insurance) damaging it and the security gate is WAY BEYOND what a labor union agreement should encompass. But, that's my opinion. The owner of the company could have called the police. He didn't and that kept Dave from being arrested.

Only in Dave's mouth. He has a few rotten teeth and a bad cigarette addiction.

The woodshop is kept better, much better than most places I've seen. All the painting is done in an EPA listed paint booth from the building separate from the woodshop.

Note to return to work -
No more driving the company truck -
No more working alone -
No work on the shaper, variety saw (table saw), lathe or any other equipment that could mess him up if he passed out into it - (Sounds silly, but I had an employee pass out over a 4 inch shaper head, and fell face first into it. He didn't make it.)
