(Just another one of my stories.)
Many many years ago.... in a place far away (Los Angeles) there lived a girl who worked in a great big land (company) with hundreds and hundreds of villagers (employees). The land (company) was Metropolitan Water District (actually, I think it had thousands of employees). The girl (who was about 21 at the time) was the care taker of the credit union, so she knew almost each and every one of the thousands of villagers (employees) for who doesn't need $$$$ from the credit union? The villagers came from many lands near and far, all up and down the waterline... from the mountains (Colorado water ways) through the Valleys (GJ probably) through the desserts (Las Vegas, Palm Dessert, Palm Springs, San Bernardino & many other lands, villages & cities). There were so many cities & villages in this land of MWD that the people traveling to and from and all about kept their cars and trucks in one great big HUGE tri-level garage. Many of the vehicles were owned by the landlord... and many employees used the cars and trucks to travel to and from and round about the land.... through the valley (Los Angeles, through the desserts, and through the mountains). Almost as many people needed to borrow cars and trucks from the landlord as people who needed to borrow $$$$ from the credit union. And it happened that the care taker of the garage and the care taker of the credit union were good friends. It also happened that in this far away place in a far away time (the 1970's), life in the city was probably pretty much as we know it today. Wild and wanton. For after all.... who sets the standards.... but Hollywood... right there in the middle of this land far away. (Not the middle of the company actually, but the place called Los Angeles) All through the town and all through the streets people ran wild and wanton. Everyone parked their cars and trucks in the landlord's garage. During the day and sometimes the night, the cars and trucks would come and go. Sometimes people would just get out of one car and into another with a friend, or out of truck and into a car. At the end of the day (or night), most would go home to a nice safe place away from the hustle and the bustle and the secrets of their very busy days (and sometimes nights). So the thousands of people would go to and fro, in and out of the garage and in and out of the credit union. Borrowing $$$ from the credit union and telling stories in the garage such as men might in locker rooms today. The care taker of the garage heard all of these stories. And since the care taker of the garage was friends with the care taker of the credit union, he one day told her some of the stories. He also told her of a secret "bet" that was taking place among the men of the land. It was a "bet" about the women in the land... and which could demand the highest bid at auction. The care taker of the credit union sat in dismay that these men would play such a game. None the less... her interest was piqued as she eagerly anticipated and awaited the end of the story which would reveal the outcome of the ballots cast, for the land had many beauties... she couldn't begin to guess who might obtain the highest bid. In the end... it was decided among all men playing the game (sometimes referred to as the conquerers) and casting their votes... that it could not be determined just which ONE woman would hold the highest bid, but two... and they happened to be best friends. Sitting on the edge of her chair, unable to wait any longer... of course the care taker of the credit union asked, "Who?" The care taker of the garage leaned over and whispered in her ear...... “You and your friend.” The care taker of the credit union gasped in astonishment... for she was far from one of the renowned beauties in this land of many, far far away. The care taker of the garage leaned back in his chair with a smirk on his face as he knew this would be his friend's reaction. Seeing the puzzled look on her face, he went on to explain. ".... for you see.... the conquerers all agree, the other women in the land could not command such a high price... for everyone knows... they would run away quickly and easily with anyone who was good looking, rich, and who should ask. And so my dear..... what would there be to conquerer?”
