Theres a TV series on BBC America, with Gordon Ramsay called the F word. So called because he is well known for his extremely shall we say decorative language.
On his weekly shows, he has been rearing animals, then sending them to slaughter and then eating them in his restaurant.
One of his projects was buying 2 piglets he named Trinne and Susannah after 2 British celebrities. He reared them in his garden, allowing his children to love and pet them, feed them and play with them. (After all they say a pig’s intelligence is equal to that of a dog.) Then when they were old enough and fat enough he had them slaughtered.
Gordon Ramsay was reported to have been very emotional about the whole thing, and a local farmer told him that the average farmer doesn’t get so emotionally close to their animals in the way he did, and Gordon had to admit he wished he hadn’t as slaughtering them was a very tough thing for him to do.
For me, I know I could not farm anything that would have to be slaughtered, I just couldn’t. Even chickens after they’d finished laying would have to be kept as pets, I just couldn’t bring myself to kill them. I know I am a 100% total hypocrite because I eat meat.. but that’s because I never met it or looked in its eyes.
I think a lot of people if they had to slaughter their meat and not have it conveniently packaged on shelves in the supermarket, wouldn’t eat so much meat either.
The polystyrene and film covered packages of neatly arranged pork chops or T bone steaks, are not in any way like the animal it has come from, and when we pick it up and put it in our carts, we don’t give it a second thought.
Next door to us is an old Texan guy who farms cattle, but the rarer of the breeds. In his large acreage he has an outstanding black bull, cow and calf, the calf is soo sweet.
I look out every day to see if they are still there. I know one day, when the bull’s too old to breed, he’ll be steaks no doubt, if that’s what they do, I’m not too sure.
Anyhhoo, the main thing is, I know I couldn’t farm any animal. Goats, pigs, chickens, geese ducks.. you name it, and then slaughter them.
Guess I’ll just have to stay a hypocrite.

I doubt that man was disturbed by his actions, but he had to say certain things to save face.
I can't stand the man myself. It's no excuse to treat people the way he does, just because of his trade. I'm not sure how he gets away with it in the UK.
I'm a hypocrite too.

Years ago, my husband brought home some fresh crayfish, they were still alive, he put them in some water in the bath.
After two days, he put them into a tank in the room.
We were suppposed to eventually eat those things after a couple of weeks.
I gave them to my sister-in-law for her tank before he killed them.
I ate crayfish for the first time in a bar last night.
I know, I'm a hypocrite, I already told you that.
Sausages and things are ok, there's no animal or pet called a sausage.

I think a lot of people if they had to slaughter their meat and not have it conveniently packaged on shelves in the supermarket, wouldn’t eat so much meat either. Or not. There are those who believe that our separation from the food chain has pushed more people toward vegetarianism rather than the opposite. In the old days, people were more involved in where their food came from. They ate fruits and vegetables in season and their were butchers and abbatoirs in most small towns.

Again, I'm a hypocrite, I could choose a crab from a tank in a restaurant, just not one that's been a guest in my house.
I've never heard of people buying them to set them free.

My parents always raised one calf along with the horses for meat, we never named it or even really paid much attention to it. With ten kids, back in those days, it was a wise way to fill the freezer and we really didn't care. I'm not one for hunting deer or killing rabbits tho, but I will cook the fish I catch, I'm not that squeamish. Take care Lost
