As the drug war rages in Mexico producing thousands of deaths a year, we are being told that 90% of Mexico's guns are smuggled in from the U.S. This is the "statistic" being thrown around in the media and by certain members of our government. I have a problem with this statement though.
First is with the people making or reporting the statement, they are no supporters of your second amendment rights. It's a little like believing the Nazis claims to support and protect Jewish rights, why would I take their word for it with no supporting evidence.

Usually they show footage of all the weapons 'bought at gunshows' here in the U.S., the problem with those is that grenades, machine guns, anti-aircraft and anti-tank rockets are illegal in the states, even at a gunshow, most aren't even manufactured here. They can be obtained illegally on the international arms market though or, more likely LEGALLY! And here is the other main problem I have with the statement.

These drug cartels are bringing in billions of dollars a year and spending hundreds of millions on their security. They are bribing Mexican politicians, generals, judges, police and so on. So what is stopping them from getting an end user certificate? An end user certificate is a statement by a government seeking to buy arms and munitions on the international market, that they are the end user, that the arms will not be re-sold or transferred to a third party. With all of the money being thrown around it wouldn't be hard for the cartels to get one and many Nations will sell these arms even without the certificate. (Kuwait, Dubai, Venezuela, North Korea, Somalia, Ethiopia, former parts of the Soviet Union and Warsaw pact) Or for that matter they could simply bride a General and buy the guns from the Mexican army!

These cartels may be brutal thuggish gangsters but they are also smart business men and it's cheaper and easier to buy the guns they require in bulk on the international market. How expensive is it to come to the United States and purchase the legal semi-automatic firearms one at a time in stores and gunshows for $1,000 or more each, with a required background check for each purchase, then smuggle them back to Mexico and make the less safe, less reliable conversion to fully auto weapons? On the international market they can order thousands of newly manufactured automatic rifles for only a couple of hundred dollars per piece from the same dealers they are getting the grenades and rockets from.

It doesn't make any sense and I think we are once again being fed a line of garbage in an attempt to manipulate and control public opinion.

Kaplaw!

Oh yeah, you know how us evil Americans are shipping guns over there with our money and any aid we give Mexico. Didnt you know that the prize inside the box of cheerios mexican is an automatic weapon?

Its nice though to see someone understands what is going on rather than believe clinton and her made up statistics.

Just remember, if you cant dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.

They weren't too concerned when it was just illegal aliens, drugs and possible WMDs coming the other way through the border.

For the past three years, every vendor at every gun show I visited was a FFL dealer, with the same limitations and restrictions as the licensed owner of a sporting store.

Our foreign aid does not come in cash. It comes as credits for products of our agriculture and manufacturing, and well, maybe some cash for the "foreign dignitaries" swiss bank account. This includes US made weapons, which eventually work their way onto the international market. Other nations do the same.

Having flooded numerous nations with arms during our wars and "peacekeeping missions", is it surprising if these come back to our neighbors?

If we really want to stop the violence in Mexico, we could enforce our own laws on illegal drug sales, ending the money flow that fuels the Mexican violence. In the past twenty years, I have never been anywhere in the US where illegaal drugs were not available within one mile, from well known local dealers.

It is clear that those talking the "90% American guns' foolishness really want to disarm America.

They have had several decades of vast funding for their "War on Drugs" and have refused to wage that war in any way that might lead to success. Their "war on drugs" has been a war to keep drug prices high, and profits high, and to eliminate those who refuse to pay for their drug dealing franchises. This guarantees the flow of money to perpetuate the violence in Mexico.

One reporter tried to buy a Russian nuclear sub a few years ago. There was no question as to its availability, the only question being "with or without missiles?". Large lots of whosale arms are readily available to any cash-in-hand buyer. Even in my small county of less than 13,000 people, I know of several offerings of wholesale arms. There is no need to lurk in the parking lots of legitimate gun shows.

What you are seeing is yet another attempt to muster support for more gun control, the gun control that has been legally rejected, by the elected representatives of the American people.

Let's just think about this from a slightly different angle...

Amount of automatic weapons seen on the streets of TX, AZ, CA, NV,,,,
Amount of automatic weapons seen on the streets of Honduras and Guatemala,,,,

Price of weapons, legal or illegal, in Texas,,,,
Price of weapons and ammo in Honduras and Guatemala,,,,

Number of UN warnings about weapons in Texas,,,,
Number of UN warnings about weapons in Honduras and Guatemala,,,,

Amount of border security in Texas,,,,
Amount of border security in Honduras and Guatemala,,,,

Yep,,, it's them damn Texans again. I bet Bush was in on it.

Freaking 90% of the guns in Mexico,,, made in America. Now,, just where is that AK-47 plant,,, right next to the UZI plant I think.
