Why is it that some people cant do just that I'll never know.
Personally I dont see the point in continually arguing with someone that refuses to see your point of view.
To me, arguing is a waste of time and energy. I can think of a lot better things I'd like to do with my time other than argue.
I think what I think, feel what I feel, and others are perfectly entitled to do the same, and no ammount of arguing will ever change that.
If someone insists they are right, they are, in thier own mind, and even if one continues to show all the evidence to the contrary it will not make the slightest difference because they are right.
I suppose arguing for some makes thier day or something, and some even goad deliberately just to get an argument out of it. you know who you are!
Blessed are the peace makers I say!
Oh and by the way..
I'm right!

You should walk a mile in these shoes, then you would either agree or argue with me. Try it sometime.

It's basically the same as raising small children. Some parents will argue with a 5 year old about wearing shoes outside in the snow. The child just doesn't get it and your blood pressure is off the scale trying to get your point across. Say it once, then maybe repeat it once, then on to the next subject. Both or neither are right and you just might live longer. NO ONE is right every time.

Charli> this line caught my eye immediately....
"continually arguing with someone that refuses to see your point of view. " Now..just saying...but isn't implicit in that...that your view needs seen and understood...not theirs?
Note how you didn't suggest.."continually arguing with someone that refuses to see your point of view AND you refuse to see theirs?"
I might suggest though that it's really a little different. I would offer that we don't refuse as much as we simply aren't capable of seeing the others point of view because we literally don't see the world the same to begin with...
and...in most arguments...we don't come to the argument to see anything different...we come to make the other see, as implicit in your comment above. In other words, its not inquiry, its battle. We don't argue to learn, we argue to be more than the other...
to be better, bigger...to be victorious.
Imagine if we started arguments agreeing we wanted first and foremost to get to common ground? Then most comments would probably be questions, in order to illuminate each others view, not sarcastic, caustic, name calling diatribe. Imagine trying to build a house with a group that argued all the time. Good luck with straight boards....
or gay!

I guess it's from the confrontational method of law - prosecution and defence condemning each other's case, suppressing evidence about their own and - who cares about fair or neutrality? That's someone else's problem lol...

Have you ever thought of those who enjoy boxing or fencing? Verbal fencing is just as much fun, as long as, like those two sports, the competitors enjoy their bouts, and keep it at the sporting level without getting angry or insulting. Debate is a good way to learn both points of view, and intellectually honest debaters have even changes point of view after being proven incorrect. It keeps your mind alive and quick.
This only applies to mutually agreed on contests, and discussion should terminate when someone looses his self control. At this point he has usually also lost the debate. One sided preaching is, of course, boorish.
That seems to be more of a male activity, as ladies' love of domestic tranquility seems to be the more powerful urge for you women. Also, those who grew up with rude argument are usually very sensitive to disagreement of all sorts.
The line is fine between debate and argument, and the greatest sin of wit is to penetrate too far. But a good debate can be very enjoyable.
But admittedly, it is mostly a guy's kind of thing.
