A friend on MD asked for this so i thought id share it with all of you.

Dream Interpretation:

A number of famous pioneers in psychology had hypotheses about what dreams mean. Freud believed that dreams are disconnected from conscious reality, and that they are indicators of your deepest subconscious wishes and desires. He distinguished two levels of dreams: the manifest level, which is the action in the dream - and the latent level, which is borne out in the symbolic elements. He found the symbolic elements the most informative about the workings of the subconscious mind, and this is what the technique below should help to access.

Carl Jung also studied dreams. There are many different techniques to interpret your own dreams and illuminate your deepest motives and desires, but the next time you have a troubling or confusing dream, try Jung's direct association technique.

1. In the centre of a large, blank sheet of paper, write down the most compelling image or element in your dream. Maybe its a body of water or an animal.

2. Write down the first word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of that aspect of your dream.

3. Continue writing down the words or phrases you associate with that image. For example, if the central element you started with was the sun, and the first word you thought was "bright", the second word or phrase you write down should also be associated with the sun.

4. Do this process as quickly as possible, without stopping to think or consider too much. The more conscious thinking you do, the less likely you'll be able to access your subconscious associations during this exercise.

Once you've run out of associations, review the words you've written down, and consider how many these might connect with what you already know about the circumstances in your life within your conscious mind.

I picked this up off the internet some time back. Its help me a lot as well as my clients.

My dreams never make sense.. they are realistic in some cases, sometimes people from my past are in them, but the scenarios are what's mind boggling. I have recurring dreams now & then too. Thankfully, I don't have nightmares & my dreams are pleasant.

One dreams because there are unfulfilled moments, repressed desires, things that you wanted to do, but could not because of the society, because of the culture, because of the religion.
Sigmund Freud and his school of psychoanalysis was so much interested in your dreams. They were not interested what you think in the day. That is all hypocrisy. What they were interested was what you dream in the night, because that will give them the clue of the true person.
Freud's interest was very correct. To know about you exactly your dreams have to be known. Once your dreams are known, then you can be helped to become more natural, less repressive. And what are the points in your life where you have been denying yourself, sacrificing yourself, either in the name of the country, or in the name of religion? Never sacrifice anything, never done anything against yourself. Whatever you want to say ,say; whatever You want to do , do. Never followed anybody; never take anybody's advice. And there are no dreams.

Don’t be skeptical, because your dreams belong to you, you see them everyday, and you’ll keep seeing them for life. It is more than obvious that you should care about learning how to translate their precious meaning, now that you know that they are so helpful.
Carl Gustav Jung .
Like his mentor Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1960) also believes in the existence of the unconscious. However, he does not see the unconscious as animalistic, instinctual, or sexual; he sees it as more spiritual. Eventually, Jung split with Freud due to their differing views on dreams.

ahhhhhh, free association. interesting....

There are also theories that dreams are just random images of memories being transfered and organized from short term to long term memory in the brain. Sort of like de-fragmenting a hard drive on your computer. Either way, dreams are fascinating.

i love ur blogs, btw.

Edgar Cayce was one of the most interesting and I found experts on dreams. He has a great book out on it for those who wish to understand them better. He also tells you how to remember your dreams and interpret them better, a real good read. Take care Lost

I'm honestly confused as to how the exercise would help me interpret my dreams, because frankly....if I eat and go to sleep.....I have dreams that I'm certain would send Freud and Jung back to the drawing boards.

I had a dream last week that i was standing on the corner of 48th St. and 8 Ave. in NYC waiting for the light to turn and my grandmother rode past me on a bicycle and gave me the finger... I'd like to hear freud analyze that one... oh wait, no i wouldn't.

yes Hero

everyone wanted a piece of michael
a genius, a legend, a star returns to heaven

I had a dream!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

and so it came to be.

Actually i had a dream last night and after doing this dream exercise i knew i had better get back to my studies instead of hanging around with the wonderful people of MD. This is the second dream warning me to get my act together. Almost like my subconscious is nagging me.

And because i have learned to record my dreams in a "Dream Journal" i have noticed some dreams have turned out to be quite prophetic when i go back to read them. But coming back to doing this dream exercise... i've had some amazing insights revealed through it.

Yikes.. I have been having nightmares lately.. I really don't want to remember some of my dreams sometimes... tho I admit, I am sometimes curious as to why it is happening lately... but I blame it on the food...

According to Freud, a fully psychoanalyzed person is one whose dreaming has disappeared. And that was not true even about Sigmund Freud himself; he continued to dream to his very last. And he was very afraid of psychoanalysis, you will be surprised to know, because he knew his disciples would only prove that all his dreams were sexual.
Once Jung wanted to psychoanalyze Freud. Jung was his most beloved disciple in those days, just as once Judas was one of the most beloved disciples of Jesus. And what Judas did to Jesus, Jung did to Freud. People whose names start with 'J' are dangerous! Freud and Jung were traveling and they started talking. Jung said, "This idea occurs to me again and again: that I would like to psychoanalyze you. You have not been psychoanalyzed. In fact, nobody who has not been psychoanalyzed should be authorized to psychoanalyze other people. And you are the founder -- you should be psychoanalyzed." Freud actually started trembling and he said, "No, no, never! That will destroy my prestige."
Jung said, "If that is so, then it has already destroyed your prestige, at least for me. If you are so much afraid to talk about your dreams, that simply shows what kind of dreams you must be having."
...............but the question is not Freud or Jung personality.
Once your dreams are known, then you can be helped to become more natural, less repressive. And what are the points in your life where you have been denying yourself, sacrificing yourself.
Dreams are communication from the unconscious, has a message for you .It is trying to create a bridge to your conscious mind.It can only be found if you start learning the language of the dream.

My biggest problem is remembering dreams long enough to write them down. Any training to get better at that?

TEX> keep a pencil and piece of paper at your bedside and as you awake, write them down immediately before you pee... even if its in the middle of the night

i am being serious, perhaps you could take your pencil and paper to the toilet with you and jot the dream down as you sit on the throne, but dont forget to put the seat down first
