It's interesting that if, for instance, a ten story building were to catch fire we would laud the firemen that climbed to the top to rescue the trapped mother and her children as heroes. We might villainize the architect or builder that neglected to incorporate modern fire escapes or firefighting equipment into the design but we would ignore those that did since everyone would get out without any assistance.
Most would agree that courage is doing something that you are afraid of. We've looked back at 'the greatest generation' for some years now with great respect and fondness for their courage and it's almost become an American mythology. They lived through the great depression, survived (most of them) the greatest war against the greatest villains and went on to raise families and build the greatest economy ever seen. Somehow it was all meant to be and they just went through the motions.
We forget that they were scared, the outcome was never certain and they didn't want to do those things at all, they did them because they had to, because to not do them meant certain disaster, death or the end of the world as they knew it.
Now we come along, the spoiled children or grandchildren of the 'greatest' and we are angry that some of these things are happening to us. We don't want to be great, we just want to live life, 'the unnoticed generation', never having to exert ourselves or demonstrate any hidden reserves of strength or resolve. It's not fair, we shouldn't have to suffer economic hardships or wars. Our greatest generation did that for us. Now we are scared.
Time for a little courage folks. It's usually someone else's screwup that turns ordinary people into heroes.

That "greatest generation" was just plain people, doing the best they could, and they did it pretty darned good.
Those who do their best now, will find the same results.

One of the greatest hinderances to mankind is the television set. We are force fed a reality that is not ours and assimilate to ourselves. The one movie that actually scared the crap out of me was "The Cable Guy", yes I know it was supposed to be a comedy, but the psychosis behind it is real. We judge ourselves on what we see. We want what those on tv have and define our existence based on the "reality" that we are shown. We emulate these people and want to be more like them. The sad thing is that we are. We are becoming a fake self entity. We dont need to be heros or to be brave, we can watch those on tv that are and assume they will protect us. Thus giving us justification not to go beyond our already set limitations. By that I mean, lets say you watch cops or another police show on tv. We gain complacency thinking they will protect us from the "bad" guys. I suffered from that as a child. I always wondered why the Brady kids were never beaten with a black leather belt and built what I wanted out of life on their family. A total illusion of what is.
When I do watch tv I tend to watch crimes shows. Not the make believe shit, but like cold case files and things of that nature. There was one comment about the police working hard and having to deal with the "I want answers and everything solved in the first 48 hours." Real detective work takes days, weeks, months and sometimes years. Television programs give us a fake insight of what really happens. CSI and other shows like that "solve" a made up crime within a couple days or less. Its easy to solve something that has the beginning and end written. Real life isnt anything like that.
I tend to use myself as an experiment to understand human nature and have used others as well.
With that being said, is it a wonder no one wants to step up to the plate and be one of the brave? Why bother when we can watch others doing it on tv in their make believe real world.
Exellent blog. Two thumbs up.

My Grandfather was killed, his single brother stepped in to take care of his brothers family. Today we have untold numbers of so called men not taking care of their own family. We are not going to fail, we failed.
