Pet Snake Kills Child

A 12ft Burmese python has killed a 2 year old child in Florida. The snake's owner, the boyfriend of the child's mother, apparently found the snake's terrarium empty, went to the child's room, and found the snake with the child. The child had been strangled, and showed evidence of bite marks.

Some people have commented that the snake had evidently been neglected, as snakes are not opportunistic eaters.

I question not whether the snake was neglected, but the mental validity of anyone who would have a 12ft python as a pet in their home. To keep such a snake with children in the home is disgustingly reprehensible. I believe these people should be charged with homicide, not child endangerment as the "media" has reported.

I agree...Some pets are just not suitable...Especially when you have children...

...I was terrified of a foot long snake in my driveway...I cannot imagine being around one that size.

You have to look at the mind set of florida people. In the 2000 elections when told to punch one hole, they punched 2. Why would they suddenly show any common sense now?

Yes I am a bit prejudice of florida people,..........thats where my mothers side of the family comes from.

I lived in South Florida for 9 years. I'm not prejudiced concerning the people there, I hate every single one of them.

I'm just kidding.

No, really.....I am.

As much as an animal lover as I am, people dont have any common sense when it comes to pets. I have never understood what someone gets from having a snake. Yeah you can hug them, but when they hug you back......its for lunch. As for florida people, I think the heat has gotten to them. That or the drugs.

I agree.....some pets should NOT be around children.
Even older ones.

We never had snakes in my house, but a neighbor had a HUGE boa constrictor. He'd bring it outside and ask the neighbor kids if they wanted to hold it......uh, hello?

Loreli, hearing your bones crush and lose of breath means he (the snake) loves you. I thought everyone knew that. *rolls eyes*

It's like people who have small children and have these beast dogs.

I had a German Shepard. I loved this dog, but he was very territorial over me.
To the point where people were scared to come close to me because they dog would freak out.
I had to get rid of him because of it. He began controlling the house (i mean it's a dog for goodness sake)
I could never have allowed kids in my house because the fear of him snapping and biting someone.

Common sense evaded those people apparently.

My horse has never kicked or bitten anyone, ever. I can stand leaning up against her backside without fear of her ever kicking me.
I wouldn't allow anyone else to do it. Why take that risk?

Look up that video of the snake. There's a video somewhere of a snake that was in a bar (i believe it's the owners pet) people are taking photos with it and then it turns on the owner and grabs his hand.

There's just some things you don't do in life.

You make a good point. Look at pitbulls. I have been around a few in my life and never had a problem with them. I was around one that would bark at me until she recognized me. I was the only person that could watch her, anyone else entering the house would be kibble. She was supposed to be locked up when no one was there but she would break out of the cage. The point being is, other than a select few, anything else was fair game. I would never put/bring a child in a dangerous situation like that. There are other dogs like that as well. They were born bred to be attack dogs. Then when something goes wrong we can plead ignorance. "I didnt know they would do that." People just dont think about their actions, or just dont care. Thats like buying a gun, shooting someone and then saying " I didnt know it would kill someone." Sad.

Pit bulls make me cringe. It's not so much the dog, it's what they could do to someone if they wanted to.

Many people buy them and don't know if the dog was used for fighting or trained to attack. Unless it is a new puppy, there's no way of knowing what it has been taught.
Scary stuff.

Oh and i love Florida.
After one Michigan winter, Florida looks like the Land of Oz.
I hope to visit there again soon.

Actually, there is a serious problem with crack in Florida. I lived in more than one place, so it isn't a localized thing.

I'm sure the owners are grieving badly, but still....

I agree with the defense thing. Kills me when someone picks up something of mine, then says .I didn't know it was yours.

I understand that, but surely you have the presence of mind to know it wasn't yours?

I know, I saw that story and couldn't believe it, to endanger a child like that and then to have it kill your child. What were they thinking?

I used to have a bf who kept a very large pet snake in his bedroom, it was also in an aquarium, and yes, they can get out, he was greeted by it one morning when he woke up, it was on his bed, scary stuff.

If I woke up with a snake in my bed .. either I would bed dead .. or I would have a NEW snakeskin belt ;)

In The UK about 2 years ago, a woman was on the news, the woman kept a pet snake, I dont remember what kind, she let it roam the house, she said he was well fed and friendly.

Then the stupid woman bought a jack russel puppy.. well you know what happened next.

She was charged with animal cruelty and banned from keeping pets for a few years. the snake was given to a zoo.

Of course this isnt as bad as a child, thats just awful and tragic.

I heard about this before going to work this morning. Does anyone know if the owner was charged with anything. Keep such a snake around children and having one killed should bring some kinda child abuse charge.

I also heard one news report a couple of weeks ago where some snake pet owners in FL were turning their unwanted pets loose! There is starting to be a major problem in the Everglades where these snakes are starting to kill off the few remaining deer population.
