I've always felt loneliness, even with friends and family around. It's like I'm missing a small piece of myself and not sure what to do to find it. I used to do a lot of writing when I was younger and it surprised me how many pieces turned out to be about being lonely.
I would write of myself as a willow tree on the shore of a lake. My branches swept down to touch the water, just as I reached out for contact with another.
Another time I wrote of a horse put out to pasture. He was old, going blind and lame. He would roam slowly over the prairie. Sometimes he dreamed about when he was young and ran with the wild mustangs. Sometimes they even came up to him as he was limping along. He got carried up in the excitement of the herd for a few minutes, feeling young and alive again, until they swept past him and he was left alone, limping along by himself again.
People wonder how I can feel alone with the cats. Well, they're cats, not people. Yes, I love them. No I would not get rid of them for some man. But still they're cats. I think I'm looking for that piece of me that is a friend, partner and lover. I wonder if he's even out there somewhere. I feel like sometimes I come close to actually finding him, but he slips away.
However I am not giving up hope. Somewhere is the missing piece of my heart. It's just a matter of finding it.

Its written beautifully and expresses deep felt sentiments and emotions.
I have shared this musical piece before but for me its sums up how individually we might feel alone but collectively overcome that. Works for me anyway.

Your blog summed up how I feel.
I have several cats and dogs. I love them so much but what I wouldn't give for that special glance, touch, a soft kiss.... Someone to ask how my day was and actually care about my response.
I believe that special someone is still out there for me and for you too.

Sometimes happiness seems like it's just an illusion, and loneliness is filled with sadness and confusion, all those lonely nights wondering will I ever find love again, animals friends and family can only fill so much of the void, But it's that touch, that feel, that soft voice that talks to you at night, and holds your emotions with loving care. That one person who can make all the worries disappear, by the look in their eyes and the warm embrace that seems to wrap you up tight in comfort, with it, it feels like you can move mountains, without it, you just move from day to day.
Loneliness has a way of talking to you at night and sometimes throughout the day, it's our heart telling us, this isn't the way it's suppose to be, for every reason we seem to find why we shouldn't fall in love, there is atleast 3 reasons why we should. Were not suppose to be alone, Life may have caused us to be alone, but love tells us, it's not the way nature planned it. God made a man and a woman for a reason, not just as some would say for a season. Sometimes the fear of failure can find it's way into our minds or even a relationship, people sometimes drive another away, without even realizing it. Through Jealousy, control or trying to change what we actually fell for in the first place.
If people would look at each other like a used car, it might make a difference, You buy it "As Is" No matter how many miles it has on it, you accept it as is, It doesn't matter how many previous owners it had, who cares? you know it's going to need some parts, some labor, even a tow every now and then..  allot of love and care to keep it running right. The cosmedics of the car seem to mean less, then it's dependability, you know it's not what it use to be, but it's okay, because it's yours, even if it has some dents and makes noises, you know every dent and every noise, you know when it's running right and when something is wrong. Sometimes you think that if you give it a bath it just looks and runs better.. It really doesn't, but it doesn't matter to you, it's as good as it's ever been, best thing about it, it's yours and no one can take from you unless you leave the keys in it...  Neglect it..  someone else will be driving your car around  Oh I could go on and on...lol
Don't pocket your dreams it still can happen..

Thank you all for the comments. As I said, I am not giving up hope of one day finding someone, my old "car"! LOL
One night when I couldn't sleep I wrote this in my mind. Took me several days before I decided to actually post it. I was afraid people would say, "well, duh! We're all lonely, why else do you think we're here?" But I decided to take the chance on posting because maybe just one person would feel the same and would appreciate it being said on a blog.
