I didn't even get any advance notice about it, they JUST sent me the notice about the cancellation 2 days ago saying that my policy cancellation was effective May 27th, May 27th??? And they just sent me the notice? What the heck!!!! I had just paid my premium too. So....Monday I will be on the phone with them to see what is going on. Since when do insurance companies cancel you after you have paid. What.....is it that they are not making enough money on insuring a condo? What is up with that? Geeeez. There is always something to add to my stress level, it's not bad enough the economy bites, now this.
Oh yeh, not to forget, I phoned State Farm the other day for Liability Insurance, the agent said, I'll get back to you with a quote, did he? Of course not, grrrrrrr. My bf's insurance agent down the street said he would phone back with a quote for liability insurance, did he? No.
Now I can understand why people don't have car insurance, you can't get anyone to phone you back!

It may have been canceled because you were running a business out of your home. I had a friend once whose wife wanted to start a small day care in her home and he called his homeowner's insurance for a price and they called him back an hour later cancelling his insurance.

That is true I am running a business from my home, but I'm just doing paperwork and using the computer here, that is it, so what the heck!!!!! I did not even tell them I had a business, unless they are now checking on everyone who has insurance through them and checking State records. I just don't know.

Try to go thru MidSouth Home insurance company, they are cheaper than State Farm, I was an agent and changed. They are suppose to give you a notice and I don't think they can just cancel like that without a reason. Did you have a claim? That happens a lot if you have a claim which I think is a bunch of bull. AIG does that so does Safeco and Progressive as well as a few others. They will give you a decent rate but if you have a claim, even if it's not your fault, and you've been paying for years, raise your rate or cancel, it's a bunch of bull sometimes. But try Midsouth, I had a claim and they didn't raise my rates or cancel and are pretty cheap. Good luck, Lost

the cancellation notice should state on it why they cancelled..ie... nonpayment of premiums, noncompliance of underwriting guidelines, etc...

Laz is right, they can't just cancel without a reason. They can go by your house and if you didn't keep it up, lets say you didn't have a proper gate on your pool fencing etc. they have to give you time or a warning even before they cancel. Even if you don't pay on time, they have to give you a warning. They can raise rates if you have a claim or cancel if you have a claim. But they just can't cancel for no reason. Or is you get a large dog like a German Shepard, Pit bull, or a snake now a days, thing like that. Lost

Oh wait, I forgot, you just started a business, do you know, some places do not allow a business in homes. Maybe that is the reason. Lost

Yes, that could be the reason since we have a business out of our home, but how in the world would they even know that? We never told them?

I would call the insurance company, or your agent to get any copies of prior "intent to cancel" notices , if they were mailed out by the insurance company but for what ever reason you didn't receive them, the insurance is not required to prove that you received them, they just have to prove they mailed them.
As far as them finding out.about your business...have you advertised anywhere for work? Posted anything on the net? Believe me, they CAN find out

oh... and another thing .. if you have a mortgage on your house, your lender would have been notified as well of a cancellation... call your lender if you have one , they should have copies of any cancellations on file, because if you don't put coverage on your house, the lender will and it will be coverage just to cover THEIR interest, n o personal effects or liability,,, and it's not cheap when the lender force places insurance

Write to your State Commissioner of Insurance, they will make them keep you insured while they "Investigate", then usually they tell the insurance company there was no reason and they have to keep you. Somethimes they make you do stuff. I had to clean up my yard and move a few cars, (so-I'm a Redneck!!) best of luck to ya.

Some insurance companies allow a business but it cost more, they should still notify you either way. But like Laz says, they do find out. Sometimes they drive by, if you have a sign in your front yard or see anything like flyers, posters, business cards, seems I remember you saying you just had some made? Maybe they got a hold of some. Either way, you are covered for the next month because you are paid one month a head of time. You need to contact them and see why, and like Laz said if you are making home payments, you have to keep coverage because a notice was sent to your bank. Just the same contact a few other companies, maybe the payment will be cheaper, try to think ahead. Lost
