Right now, they are relatively the same size.

They order the same meal, eat the same amount of it. They do this at every meal, and have nothing but water in between, for several years.

One of them is gaining weight.

Are they out of control?

Normally, they both have a soda at lunch. The one who is gaining weight is told that a lower calorie alternative is available. They order that instead.

Are they out of control?

It turns out (as is really true) that the sweetener in the diet soda causes thyroid problems, and they gain even more weight.

Are they out of control?

They are told to drink water instead, and to consider healthier alternatives to their meals. More vegetables.

The water is contaminated with perchlorates. The vegetables are broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and crunchy soy beans with a little mustard dip. As it turns out, all those things are goitergens, and the person gains more weight.

Are they out of control?

"F this!" they say, when someone starts suggesting they eat half the amount the other person is eating. "I'm going to go back to eating what I want, and enjoy life as it is." and they go back to eating the same food, drinking the same drink, as the other person.

Are they out of control?

The other person is noticeably absent from the table at the end of the meal, every meal, for one meal a day. They are in the bathroom, vomiting. This is their diet plan. They are thinner, they appear more in control of their life than their dining partner.

Are they in control?

This is deep. There are variables. There are points, as in several. Consider.

Thank you, BC

I had a friend, in grade school, who was a lovely young lady; strong in body, mind, and spirit She had a definite thyroid problem.

I have found out, from doing research, that she also had a lousy doctor. He didn't care that she was not losing weight, that she had to eat starvation rations, and that she felt tired and crappy all the time. He did not change her medication.

At the time I was very young and had very little understanding of doctors, medicine, etc. at all; and, you know, everyone went around saying that allergies, thyroid troubles, and such as that, were not that big of a deal and just an excuse to be fat and/or lazy.

She was ridiculed all the time for over-eating, called a hog, and worse; but, she was barely allowed any food at all, never candy or soda or anything sweet even if it was a celebration of some sort ..and it was all for nothing, because she was still fat and still gaining.

I do believe with a more caring doctor, and less b.s. from her classmates, her life could have been greatly improved. And, there was nothing wrong with her to make people hate her, except for her size.

We had two other friends - one was kind of overweight and could eat like there was no tomorrow, the other one was rail thin and kept up with her!

I was not fat, not rail thin, but I weighed enough that some people called me fat, sure - I had a lot of bone and muscle and I was not starved, I had digestive issues so my belly was swollen up. If I could have seen an allergist and gotten proper treatment, back then, I would have been rail thin on the amount I was eating, which was more than the very large friend, but much much less than the rail thin one.

There are just too many variables for people to make snap judgments! I mean, yeah, if you know someone is capable of losing weight, because they wenton a diet and did it before, and you see them up 100 lbs and munching on an entire carton of ice cream, you can say that person is out of control. However, if that diet was super restrictive, you can say they were out of control then, too; and it probably would cause them to gain more weight than they lost.

Moderation is the key. It's okay to have some sweet, some processed, some grains, some vegetables, some meat, some eggs - anything you aren't allergic to, anyway. The rest is listening to your body and learning from it.

Which is a bit hard to do with everyone else screaming "Die you fat pig!" in your ear!

good blog

not only thyroid but hormones causes weight problems too. i am so suspicious of food these days... i dont know if they are feeding the chickens hormones to fatten them up or using hormones in packaging to preserve.

who knows with the chemicals we ingest, surely that has to affect the chemical balance our bodies should have.

i am suspicious of big business who feeds us, everyone seems a little too greedy these days
