Rhonda called a short time later. It took everything in me to remain calm, especially when she started out with, "Hi, Mommy." I knew I had to remain calm......for her sake, so I answered back, "Hi, Baby Girl." She told me she was going in for a surgery, and I told her that I had heard that. She told me then that she did not remember much of what Dr. B. said to her, but she did remember him saying something about a Septic Left Hip and that they were really bewildered by it all. We chatted for several minutes.......with her falling in and out of sleep. She mentioned that I needn't travel down there right now. I agreed. I told her that I would wait until she comes out of the hospital and come down then and help Eric take care of her. She loved that idea! And then....they came in to get her. We said our good-byes and I love yous and hung up. I can not explain how I felt at this time. There were just waaaay too many emotions running through me, so I will not even try.

And then.....I did something that I should not have done. I went on the computer and looked up Septic Left Hip. In my research, the only woman who was doing well with this, was one who had had a total hip replacement. She was twice my daughter's age! The others were using walkers to get around. One man had even died, but it seems there may have been other complications involved with his.

Eric called again at around 2 p.m. my time. He said that Rhonda was finished with the surgery and was resting more comfortably than what she had since she entered the hospital. She woke up and wanted to talk to me. She only spoke a few words saying, "I'm okay, Mommy" and fell back to sleep. Doesn't it seem that when your children are in pain or need you for any reason, they seem to use the term 'Mommy' more often, instead of just 'Mom'? And it was breaking my heart! Eric took the phone from her and explained what the surgeon had done to Rhonda. The doctor scraped the infection from her hip, drew out more fluid and inserted a drain tube for any infection left in there, and finally gave her a shot of Coumadin in her tummy to prevent any blood clotting. Rhonda must have been listening, because all of a sudden she yelled out, "I'm going to go home and will have to use a walker and live in pain for the rest of my life!" I lost it. Obviously, she had failed to mention to me all that the surgeon had told her that morning. I do realize that Doctors have to prepare a patient for the worse case scenarios.

Eric could only speak with me for a few moments, because Dr. B., the surgeon, and some nurses came into the room to check on Rhonda and wanted to talk with them. Enter Dr. R., the man from the Infectious Diseases Control Center. Together, they explained to Eric........and Rhonda when she could listen........that Dr. R. would be taking this 'culture' and putting it into a Petri Dish to try to find out what this bacteria is. He said that it could take anywhere from just a few days to up to a month, and then they still may not be able to get it figured out. Sometimes, freak things like this just happen. Eric called me back after they had left, telling me this news. I knew she was somewhat resting and would be doing so for several hours. I decided to leave the house for a while, with cell phone in hand.

I am a Personal Care Attendant for my sister. That is my job. I had called her in the morning to fill her in on what I knew about Rhonda. She told me not to even think about coming in to work...that she would manage. When I learned that Rhonda's surgery went just fine and that she was resting, I headed out the door to my sister's. When I walked in to her house, she asked me, "What are you doing here? You did not need to come." I looked at her for a moment and said, "Yes.....I think I did need to." She understood immediately.....Bless her heart. She knew I would go nuts sitting or pacing and waiting alone at home. By the time I arrived there, it was dang near time for dinner, so I made her dinner......and made sure she took her medications for the day, which she had not done. I stayed for a few hours with her and headed back home.

It was around 7 p.m., I think, when Eric had called again. He said that they had given Rhonda some more Morphine and something else........and that she was throwing it all up.......again. All this pain....and no pain medication would stay in her system. He told me that she wanted me to call her a bit later. He was headed home for a well-deserved rest. I waited until 9 p.m. and called the Nurse's Station. I wanted to make sure that Rhonda was not sleeping when I called her. The nurse said, "Oh......she's up!".....and chuckled when she told me that Rhonda insisted on going to the bathroom......alone......just her and her walker! I was feeling better. I called her, and we chatted for about fifteen minutes before she fell asleep on me.........lol. But I knew she was getting better.

So glad she is getting better. My little granddaughter lost her tibia due to an infection, but she is growing another one. The doctors are pleased as punch. So glad that your daughter is going to be fine.
