Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence ?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.
So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.
Remember: freedom is never free!
It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

I'm glad someone posted this lot's of people appreciate what these people went through to fight for freedom, lots of people only know the fact that we have freedom, and lots of people even have a clue where we got our freedom from. It's a lot of pride they fought for, and it's time people take pride in what was fought for to get for everyone in this great nation we live in. Here's a kudo, great blog!

Snopes analysis.
Much of what we call "history" is nothing more than propaganda. The men who signed the Declaration of Independence were human. To elevate them to godhood is to demean their efforts, to say that they didn't do enough.
In general, if something is forwarded through email, it's probably bunk.

Whether these things are true or not. I think the point is what would you sacrifice for freedom? So many men. So many lives. So many for beleifs, religion, politics. So few have any respect for any of the great men responsible for any of it. Not just this country.

These gutless cowards we call leaders these days wouldn't die for a damn thing. Oh they'll ask your kids to die for their phony money making wars, but the only ideals or beliefs they recognize are power and money.
The ONLY people in any type of leadership I have any respect for is our military. The rest are nothing but useless charlatans.

Once again you've managed to "Iluminate your Antipathy of this Country" as well as further confirm your Ignorance of history.
Where did it say, anywhere that these men were godlike? Or that anyone has elevated them to that status, other then your own nonsense? These men believed in "Freedom" even at the risk of giving their own life.
Now were treated with "Idiots and Morons" Who travel the world apologizing for this country, who were raised on foreign soil, telling the world were a Muslim country, along with the useful "Nit Wits" who fail to recognize that people all over the world are dying to get here, Just for the dream to live in a country that those Morons bash and demean.

Whether these things are true or not. I think the point is what would you sacrifice for freedom? The history of this nation is filled with people who gave the last full measure on the altar of freedom. It dishonors them to imply one must rely on fairy tales and propaganda to illustrate what price some are willing to pay.
No man makes a free choice when he is deliberately misinformed. Without Truth, there is no freedom.

Ah, PoPo. Since when has the TRUTH had an air of antipathy? I suppose you prefer lies, as long as they justify what twisted beliefs you hold dear?
These men were the leaders of the Revolution. But they didn't suffer any more or any less than their neighbors. Some of the signers suffered, but almost none of them suffered BECAUSE they were signers.
The signers, the leaders of the Revolution, our Founding Fathers, did enough heroic deeds. As I said, to imply that they should have done more is to dishonor their memory. They were men, mere men. Learn to live with that that horrid little fact. They were not saints. They were not martyrs. They were just men, trying to live out their lives, wanting a better world for their children and their children's children.
That is the truth. They were great men. Not perfect men. Not gods.

And lets not forget those serving now. My friend is working in 120 degree heat in full gear carrying 100 lbs. Water is warm because they try to give it to the guys frozen but by the time they get it, it's already thawed. Sand storms are kicking up now so it gets in every inch of their skin, he says under their clothes he feels like he's totally oiled down. Can you imagine working in those conditions all day 24/7 as some have to work those shifts? BTW he volunteered, as he felt he wanted to do something for his country and for us. His fourth tour, so lets hope it's not in vain and something good comes out of our freedom. He just doesn't walk around he works all under these conditions and stress, so remember with our servicemen, there wouldn't be an Independence Day. Lost
