Christian is just a word. Like many other words we humans use it to try and describe something. When that happens you get many interpretations of that word because many people have different takes on that word. We as people want to classify everything. When that happens we usually lump everyone who is remotely associated with that word as all the same and they are not.
By definition, the word christian pertains to a person who follows and obeys the teachings of Jesus. Jesus was the Christ and therefore those who follow him would be christians. It is no different then people in America being called Americans. American is just a word to describe what country you are from or live in, it does not describe what type of American you are. For we all know that all Americans are not alike except that they are all Americans. That is no different then christians. There are many christians who associate themselves with different religions(Baptist, Catholic, etc.) yet are all classified as christians because at the end of the day they are all followers of Jesus. They just have their different ways in which they follow.
I saw a blog earlier wondering why you see the term conservative christians all the time and not liberal christians. I don't know why we classify anyone as christian this or christian that. You either follow the teachings of Jesus or you don't. It has nothing to do with all your other beliefs or traditions. Are you truly a christian if you pick and choose the teachings of Jesus you think best fits your life and disregard the rest of His teachings? Maybe why we don't see the term liberal christian so much is that some of the liberal points of view are anti Jesus teachings. Such as abortion, gay marriage, etc. But to jump to that conclusion would be to say that all liberals have these points of view which I am sure some don't. It would also be jumping to conclusions to say that all conservatives are christians which I am sure they are not. Then you have those who claim to be christians but don't follow the teachings of Jesus very much if at all. That is why classifying people is just not a good thing.
People are people and we should just leave it at that. I am a follower of Jesus and I adhere to His teachings. Because of this society deems me a christian. Now if I were to label myself all that society has deemed me as I would be called a white, American, christian, middle aged, middle class, single adult male. But in all actuality I am just a me.
