As I was dozing in and out of the hearings for Judge Sotomayor...I am wondering what others have had to say during these proceedings...here is something of interest. I love how the right compares the hearing to either a football game or baseball...WTF??

Double Standard for a Latina I just read this article in today's New York Times: "Sotomayer Says Identify Won't Distort Her Positions."
"Judge Sonia Sotomayor insisted on Tuesday, in the face of sometimes skeptical questioning from Republicans, that she would never allow her background or life experiences to determine the outcome of a case if she were elevated to the Supreme Court."
Two questions and an observation:
1. Has a white man ever been asked if he would allow his background to determine the outcome of a case?
2. Is it even conceivable that a white man would be asked if he would allow his background to determine the outcome of a case?
3. Worse: a white man has claimed that his background affected and would continue to affect his decisions. That man was Justice Sam Alito, who said during his confirmation hearings:
"But when I look at those cases, I have to say to myself, and I do say to myself, 'You know, this could be your grandfather, this could be your grandmother. They were not citizens at one time, and they were people who came to this country...'
"When I get a case about discrimination, I have to think about people in my own family who suffered discrimination because of their ethnic background or because of religion or because of gender. And I do take that into account."
Imagine those words coming out of Sonia Sotomayer's mouth. Imagine the Republican furor.
So when a white man says his background will affect his decision making as a Justic, that's an asset for Republicans. A Latina, on the other hand, is forced to disclaim such a possibility.
Wow.

I say everyone applies for a job/position behind a curtain. Send many people of different color, age and sex behind the curtain. Nobody can know age, gender, ethnic background, etc. Let the decision lie on facts and experience only. Then will people be happy???? I doubt it.

It wouldn't even have been a thought, let alone an issue, had SHE not said first:
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

In reality, who wouldn't apply there background and experiences to there judgment? Everything we do is based on that criteria.. Even someone that is supposed to express non partiality is going to base there decisions on personal experiences.. so to me.. it's a stupid question.. I've never gone back to see the kind of questioning Clarence Thomas had to go through.. but I do remember something about a pubic hair and a coke can..

She WILL be confirmed easily...
Can you imagine what some of us would go through if we tried to run for something??? Good gawd, once they started looking into some of the stuff I did in my younger days, I couldn't even get elected dogcatcher!!

While Latin men are in some ways dominant, in the Latin culture, women are empowered as the heart and strenght of the family, and the vouce of loving care.
And I agree, the Latin culture still holds traditional home and family to be extremely important, and places the Mother at the heart of the home. Any man or woman coming from that environment is in a better position to make good judgements than any person who has not been raised without those values. That especially holds true as we watch American families destroyed by materialism and lack of morality, lack of basic love.
In reading world news, I have often noted female Lating leaders make similies and metaphors, not to baseball or football, but to running a home, and old fashioned kitchen economics. It reflects the good practical sense that is so much needed in these times, imperiled by showboat politicians.
My money says she'll get in!

errr - I seriusly doubt that your paste appeared in the NYT -
She is an ugly overweight lesbian, typical of Democrat Politicos. (see Pelosi, Mikulski and Feinstein) Her collegues have openly trashed her. Her writing skills are pathetically weak. He judical integrity is VERY LOW. She admits to being an Affirmative Action poster child.
This is how low our Country has stooped - appointing someone like her to the Supreme Court.
