I am always amazed at the people who put you down, because you came from the poor side of town! I started Life in Compton and N.Long Beach Calif. For those who are not familiar with the area, It's not the safest place to be, especially at night. My first look at life was from the Black side of town, I grew up early on with the Crips..It was a housing project called Via Carmelita's,That's right I grew up with the brotha's, where I was treated no differently then my fellow brothers, we were all broke livin in da hood aka projects! Where I learned how to fight and not back down, My brothas took me in and treated me with respect, taught me their ways and slang, nicked name me Casper..lol. In those days to Joe public and the cops I was a sell out, even lower then the one's they hated, For that I will always be Grateful! It taught me lessons of just how nasty racism can be.

Then welfare gave us a raise lol..and we moved to a Varrio called Chivas.....That's when Life really begain and the Vatos took me in..after all I am part Mexican, well they jumped me in, that's how you get in a gang, and I became a Homeboy! A Vato loco, and proud day for me,lol.....La Raza, taught me Loyalty and backin up your gang, I learned all about the culture and the Chicano way of life! They nick named me El Dino, cuz I was a bit of a Romeo and could break into anything! ( not bragging ) but it was, what it was! We had a falling out over some White boys......aka surfers! That was all the rage in those days, Whites against Chicano's at school, and well, anywhere you went really.

The surfers were jumping on a homeboy and a big fight was to ensue after school, only my homeboys decided there were to many white boys, so they werent going to show! The crazy part of it was, I was going to show with or with out them, that's right i lived by Mi Vida loca, another Varrio called Artesia told me they would back me up if I joined their Varrio, So I did, even at the risk of "Blood In Blood Out" thus the name El POPO was given to me...Some here thought it might mean Cop, quite the opposite. another proud day for me in those days.......El POPO is a Volcano in Mexico! that erupts without warning! The volcano and the gang can both be Googled now days

What I found to be the craziest thing of all, Blacks killed blacks, the fighting and drive by shootings were black on black, with a few mixed or white boys in their..lol
Chicano's killed each other, brown on brown crime, Yet we always said Viva La Raza (long live the race) didn't make allot of sense to me. Life in L.A. or East Los and South Central is very different then what many of the movies show. The movie "Colors" came really close to how is was and even show'd Varrio's I knew well, "Boyz in da Hood" was another one that lends a good view of life in da hoods.

At age 17 I had 11 arrest and charged with 17 felonies, I was in and out of every juvi in L.A. Mi Vida Loca...The state of California extradited me in hand cuffs to a place called Arkansas.. Talk about cultural shock....going from a concrete jungle to Mayberry.. Where I dated my first white girl.. It should be obvious I'm not prejudice, I just never really had much interaction with them growing up. I saw some prejudice things in Arkansas I really only thought happen in the movies, The laundry mat had a sign out front that read "No Colored's" So I asked the old white guy running the place, where do I wash my colored clothes at? he laughed and said that means no niggers... It felt like I was in a time warp!

Anyway, living in the south opened my eyes to both the good and bad sides of life. Ironically I learned to love the south, the Soutern Hospitality, Southern Respectful ways, and of course the Southern Women... Wow I have never dated white girls before that...Those Southern Girls drove me crazy.. later on in life I moved into a white suburb! and was amazed at the thought process of those who have! And how they put down those who dont have $ I was blessed enough to have a company at the time that was making money, I bought the only house with an in ground pool in this Burb, I drove a corvette and my wife (a white girl) drove a new bonneville. See what happens when poor boy from the Ghetto get's a little money? he marrys a white girl... I'm kidding! sometimes I just crack me up....

Seeing LIFE from the Black side of town! The Brown side of town! and Then the White side of town! Has given me an insight, that money can't buy. I have concluded that Money can sometimes cause people to forget the important eliments that make us all equal as a people! Reaching out to one another and treating everybody as Brothers and Sisters!

Regardless of your education, I completed the 9th grade and kicked out of the 10th grade and told never to come back I figured it out though, the A students teach, the B students work for the C students, and D students get rich... Many think it's the size of your bank account, that makes you who you are?.....we are all just people who should reach out to one another, and lend a helping hand up! not a slap........And maybe in the process we can learn to appreciate each other, not for what we drive, but how we drive each other to better people. I see some here who mock those without a college education and are impertinent to those who don't? Their animadversions and antipathy are both Stodginess, illuminating them as ultracrepidarians.. The truly intelligent don't have to brag or put others down to feel superior.

It does not matter the color of your skin, it's how you live your life and where it all begin! So I Tip My Hat To Those who have embraced me, from all ages all colors, cultures and races, I am today, what you were to me yesterday..

We agree...... But...and doncha just love them buts.....

What I see far to often, here and on other sites, People who stand up for something, are attacked by those who disagree, and the shots are fired back and forth. I've been guilty of the same thing my self Sometimes things are easy to say and harder to take back.

oh wow, great blog, el popo!
I grew up half Am. Indian in a white redneck community right close to a rez...in this town they look down on anything an Indian has or owns and think all their chit is gold...also, lots of folk didn't really like it that I married a very beautiful looking white girl with long blonde Farrah-style hair. people will be nice to my face, cause they all a little bit unsure how I might react at times, but I have a white friend who tellz me what is said when I'm not around to hear it. its all ignorant bs and they need to go around the block a few times.

It sure does..... at one of my grandkids birthday party, I said to the other grandfather from her side...Look at this gathering and all the people here, there was close to 50 people there friends and family, this would have never happen if it weren't for you and I getting married to the women we married 30 years ago and starting our own family.

More people need to realize it's not where you live (d), what you do (did) or how much money/material things you have. It's your character and values that make you the person you are. Some people see only the outer shell and never look deeper than that. What a shame!
Again,a very good blog!

Hola Signme....

I agree, society is in a state of mind that your education, your job and your net worth is the most important part of who you are, rather then Character honesty and morality. It's a down right shame, some of the first questions you get from people are what kind of job do you have? do you own or rent? what kind of car do you drive? Things that have nothing to do with who you are as person. Bernie Madoff and Tom Petter were billionaires, both are now in jail for stealing thousands of peoples retirements and money. Yet in their day they were the darlings everyone wanted to be involved with.

Thanx for your thoughts...

One of the most proud things I am of my 38 year old son is that even as a child the boy never had a prejudice bone in his body. He saw no difference in humans from their back ground. He did not like druggies and such but he has always had friends from all different countries. He married outside his race and every one of his guys at the wedding was from a different race. He has truly an international heart.--------> Proud Mama

Fay,
I can feel your pride in your response.... Those of us who have been blessed enough to raise our kids and not just have them for visits, in my case we didn't have day care, when I was married she was a stay at home Mom..it's how we felt would be the best way to raise our children. So yes our children are a reflection of us in most cases, what we teach them when their small is how they grow up and act as adults, It's an awesome responsibility, but worth every minute of it, especailly when we see them as adults and the friends they keep.

You did some things very right early on... after all he is your son...
prejudice can be an ugly thing, that really amounts to nothing but ignorance or bad up bringing. it sounds like your son picked a wife based on her heart and charcater, not the color of her skin! Big ups to you and him.

Thanx for sharing this....

It seems that now matter who you are and where you came from there is always someone near by to make you feel less human. I grew up middle class. We struggled to be middle class. To pay our own bills and own a home. To the middle class we didn't have enough, to the wealthy we were poor, to the poor we were rich. No matter what we had no right to complain. We made too much for a hand out but not enough to buy anything new. Not a tough life to some but a terrible life to others.

My race is mixed but since it is not mixed with Hispanic or African I am to call myself a "Caucasian". I have some Indian in my but not enough by some to claim it yet too much by some to not claim it. I now claim that I am Bohemian since my last name is Bohemian. Not that it should matter.

I have friends from all backgrounds but even to them I am not ghetto enough or too ghetto. Some are shocked at the things I endured as a child. Using a bucket as a toilet because of frozen pipes in the winter? "Gross". To others? At least I had a house with heat in one room.

I did have what many forget about. I had love. True love from a family who survived it all. Many are now dead but their love lives on. So who cares what or who's blood created me. It is now MY O+ red blood (that you someday will need). I am who I am. Not perfect but not terrible. Not intelligent but not ignorant. Not all things but yet many things. Love me or hate me but leave my race out of it.

Good blog neighbor.

Hola Neighbor... Buenas Dias...

Wow......very interesting and very true, I love your openness and truthness here.
So many for what ever reason are afraid to share their story, I applaud your honesty..

i've been in that situation before in between classes, not quite fitting into middle to upper and not qualifying to be considered lower class, it's a tough situation, or when those judge you to be low class becasue your pockets are full of love and not money. Or drag race into it as if we had a choice? So i understand where your coming from.

I just love people who can be honest and open, and tell it like it is...Either were enough or too much, maybe too little either way I'm okay with that..atleast we are who we are without pretense..

Thank you so much for your thoughts...
Nice having you as a neighbor...

I am not afraid to share my story. It is what makes me who I am. Proud but humble. To hide from your past only makes you phony. I can't live up to what I would have liked my life to be so why pretend that I know what to do with 9 utensils rested alongside my plate, not to mention the 5 glasses. My meal tastes just as good when I use the same fork for my salad on through to dessert. I will admit that I like at least 2 glasses with my meal and do use a napkin. Community butter knife? NO! Belching? Not at my table. Prayers are a must, but only for me and my children. Optional for guests. I prefer a dress to jeans and fertilizer to perfume. Well, sometimes...............

Yes, Bohemian suits me well in so many areas. I even Polka

I is what I is and I ain't what I ain't.

Peaceful....Thanx.... I use to listen to the song Cherokee Nation, and can only imagine what our ansestors must have went through, it blows my! looking back over history of this country and the world of just how badly man has treated his fellow man.. We all have had to overcome our own struggles in life, some blame everybody and others just see it for what it was, and make changes so the next generation has it a little better. I just wanted my own to have a better shot at this thing called life they was aforded to me.
