For a while now, I've been hearing a lot of end of America rhetoric. As if the country I love will somehow crumble because a political party didn't win an election or because we don't all worship the same magic.

I'm living proof that the shameful grandstanding is nothing but empty chatter. My life has never been better than it is right now at this exact moment. And the funny thing is, it took a near disaster to make me realize it. A real one, not the invented ones I keep hearing might happen.

I've been promoted at my job, I've just bought a second car, and for the first time in years, I'm able to wake up and actually like what I see staring back in the mirror. So if this is the end of the world, I wish Armageddon would have happened a decade ago. This Apocalypse thing is awesome!

I know what some of you are thinking. He must be getting some. Actually no, I'm still single, and might be for a little while longer. I actually like my life exactly the way it is, and am not in any hurry to change a thing.

Except for one little detail. I've started looking at houses. So while others may sing and pray for doom and gloom, I'll keep my head out of the toilet. Because life hasn't looked this good in years. And it's only getting better.

As a side note, this is not an endorsement for a political party or any belief system. Because while others may choose to thank imaginary friends and politicians for their good fortune, I have two people to thank. My good friend who saved my life all those years ago, and Austin, who reminded me exactly what I'm capable of.

The furture of the country is handed to the next generation, however, I respectfully point out you probably have no memory of what milk used to be in America. Point being, what you think is doing good compared to one that has this memory is like the junk apple you may eat today and the one I ate at your age.

So your compelling argument is that I don't know what milk is?

Sounds like life is good.

Get a a nice adjustable rate mortgage, on a cheap house in a forclosure sale. If your credit is good, you won't have to worry.

And someone else will take care of the seven trillion national debt. You don't have to worry about that. It won't affect your taxes or services much.

And if the energy producing nations are a bit unstable, they are far away, and probably won't nuke us. No problem.

Congrats on your 'life is good' moment...it is nice...when it is good.

Mine...close to the best...but not quite. There was that one night staying up with this really groovy chick discussing Marxian analysis of global power structures in 1981...god...she was soooo good!

I mean...analytically and all.

Drink deeply of the cup....mad man!

I suspect the baker's point was that you don't know comparative qualities of milk, apples, or life quality, and are content with a very watered down standard of quality.

Anyone who drank unadulterated cows' milk knows it tastes much different from the treated stuff sold most places today. Likewise tomatoes, apples, and most food products.

Do you know what it feels like to sleep peacefully at night without locking the doors, or what it is to just leave the key in the car because no one will steal it? Can children play outdoors in your neighborhood with no danger from perverts or drug pushers?

Growing self acceptance is good, but your second car is not really quality of life for the general populace of the country.

The poverty thing is like playing musical chairs. You may have a seat in the last round, but listen, the music is starting again.

50 years ago we were worried about the commies and the BOMB.

40 years ago ...it was hippies and free love and LSD that was going to be the end of us ....oh yeah ,and the BOMB.

30 years ago ,it was the aftermath of Vietnam and Pot ...and agent orange

20 years ago,.....well actually things werent too bad 20 years ago unless you were a democrat..

10 years ago we were worrying about the aftermath of Slick Willy's pissing off the arabs everytime he needed to focus attentions away from his dailiances...

...now we know the price, and a new democrat is trying to mend those fences...I wish him luck ,although personally I don't think it will do much good.

on a personal level ,my life is an echo of the blogger...for the first time in years things are looking up for me and like him for the first time in my life I can do more than just dream about home ownership....good job ,good paycheck...recent cash (inheritance) windfall ...life is good .but as my granny always said ...good times dont last forever and its good to put away for a rainy day ...so while times are good for me personally at this time and i am enjoying the fruits of it ...i'm mindful of the lessons granny taught me and i'm not going overboard with my excesses.

Great news K.. .I think if everyone looks for the good its there...sometimes a bad recession brings families closer.. less $$ to spend and puling together type thing...finding things to do cheaper etc.. I know my life even tho the $ are so no there now is more wondermous than it has been since forever it seems... my life these past few years had been wrought with turmoil but I haven't been this happy since the birth of my children...if all you can see is doom and gloom and not appreciate even the little positives in life you have no reason to expect any change ...me? I see better and better things happening... and they do!!!

Glad to see it for you k! Listen to the guy who posted above me, although I have a feeling you already know that was good advice - never spend as much as you think you can!

As for me, I know people must be really sick of my talking about how good my life is, but it was a long time coming and I went through a fair amount of hell getting here, so I'll just keep glowing and hope they all find themselves where I am now - there's really not a whole lot that I'd ask for. If it goes south, that's life but I'm going to enjoy it while I have it (always setting up Plan B, Plan C, etc. just in case).

And as for the country, and life in general - looking back from 65 to 6, there've certainly been lots of changes, and yes, the taste of milk is markedly different from what it was when I was first introduced to it. I was born on a dairy farm, but there's never a lot of point looking back at what was, or even remembering my parents and grandparents mourning days past when things were better yet. It's easy forgetting things like sweatshops, company stores and corruption that makes today's look like Sunday school. Hindsight's not only 20-20, it wears rose colored glasses too!
