Yesterday I received a call from my mother. She asked me if I had been watching the news. I told her that I had but, it had not been the local news. She asked me if I had seen the news about the double murder that had taken place in the little county where I grew up and where most of my family still lives. Of course I had not heard about it and she proceeded to tell the details. It would appear that my father's sister's grandson murdered his 66 year old mother and his 41 year old half brother. (Most do not think he is my aunt's grandson, but who knows)

This cousin of mine along with his 21 year old girlfriend for some reason killed this woman, put her in a sleeping bag and took her to another county and dumped her in some roadside shack. Police think that perhaps he did it a week ago this past Sunday. When his half brother came in and caught them cleaning the mess up, he questioned where their mother was and what was going on. Leonard (my cousin) turned on his brother, shot him in the back of the head and then buried him in the deep freezer. The news said that he even went to the police who lived just down the road from him and asked him if he had seen his mother.

Leonard is related to me on my mother's side as well. His mother was my great uncle's daughter. While I did not know either one of them, I can not understand someone who could kill their mother and then wrap them up in a sleeping bag and dump her in the woods. From every report that I have read, she was a good mother to him. I did find out that he is on drugs, so I can only ascertain that he was "higher than a kite" when he murdered his mother. There was a pretty big age difference between the two brothers, Leonard is 27 and his half brother was 41. Evidently they were not raised together, so I am wondering if they even felt like brothers. But I just don't understand how the world is getting to the place that it is getting when children kill their parents and siblings.

It is the family left behind that I grieve for. Not only have they lost a sister, mother and a brother, they have the shame of knowing that it came at the hand of one of their own flesh and blood. Surely Leonard was not in his right mind or he could not have committed such a horrible crime. I only pray that justice is served and the family's life can get back to normal. But I have a feeling it is going to take a mighty long time. Just another crime committed while under the influence of drugs.
