Les Paul, the innovator, the inventor of the electric guitar (the log) died today. He was 94.

I grew up listening to my Dad's Les Paul records. I can still remember asking my Dad how does he play like that. I used to have a collection of his old 78's and have a few of his CD's... The Chester and Lester album (Chet Atkins and Les Paul) was great! Two masters of the guitar. Les Paul and Mary Ford, what great memories.. I was so young but loved sitting with my Dad listening to that great music.. How High The Moon.. RIP Les... You brought me joy....You will never be forgotten..

Les's music seems sort of common now, since just about everybody copied his original style. But in his time he was a radical innovator. His technical advances enabled him to do stuff nobody else had ever done, and he was a fantastic picker beyond that.

I still listen to his old LPs which alternate him showing what an electric guitar (new then) can do, with a slow one in Mary Ford's deep incredibly sensuous voice. What a pair!

I doubt that there is any guitar player alive today, whose style doesn't incorporate some of Les's licks.

His music will live on for a long, long time.

Too cliched, but he was truly a legendary figure in the development of popular music. I'll bet Fender releases a commemorative Les Paul version.

Acch.. Elmer corrected me. I was thinking Fender made the "Les Paul." He is, however, correct. It was Gibson.
