Like most parents, i am use to shelling out about $50-$75 at the start of the school year. I am not talking about clothes, i am speaking of supplies {paper, crayons, glue, ect.}. I picked my son up today from school and in his hand was a brite orange paper, he was waving it like a flag with a big grin on his face . I got in the truck and began reading the paper, it was leting all the parents know that the school will be charging a $35 supply fee per child . Now how can this be when i buy everything he needs plus some .
I remember when i went to school {22 years ago} taking nothing! All the stuff i needed was in the class room and my momma didn't have to pay for squat. I know that was years ago but i know for a fact the school my son attends is the same school i went to as i child, it hasnt grown, the classes average about 15-20 students. Yet the school system is bringing in four times as much tax revenue.I am a bit confused on where all the money is going because it sure aint getting into the classrooms, even the teachers buy there own supplies

Indeed, the teachers seem to pay a LOT of stuff from their own pocket.... I was really shocked when I learned the truth about that.

I am a bit confused on where all the money is going
Maybe the high "managing" salaries of many principals explain some of the money that doesn't go into classrooms?

We have some stores near me that are charging 1 cent for a pencil, pen. There's coupons going around that allow you to buy crayons, markers, glue sticks etc. for $1 for each pack.
We stock pile the stuff and donate loads of supplies to the school and i also have shipped loads of them to Afghanistan and Pakistan to help with the schools being built there. I probably spend $30.00 on supplies that would last one child 10 years!

The school also gets huge discounts.

If they force you to pay $35, then they better be supplying everything your child needs because this stuff is not that expensive.

(not to mention that most of us parents send hand sanitizer, napkins, utensils etc during the year.)

Whenever a gift was needed for the teacher, (birthday, Christmas, etc), my child would give the teacher 30 pencils. The teacher was grateful because then he/she wouldn't have to pay for them herself to give to other children in need.

Teacher's don't need another trophy that says "World's Best Teacher" or flowers. They need help with making their paychecks go further.

Could the supply fee be for things that used to be considered a part of class, such as photo copy paper for test materials and handouts?

I would definitely ask what the supply fee entails, I am sure you will though.

I guess next the children will have to rent his or her desk, locker, etc. for each year.

I don't understand charging parents more and children receiving less education due to budget cuts.

Each of my classes is just under $2000 each. I definitely know how you feel.

Well it is going to the union dues the pay for the elections to raise your taxes to raise more fees to go to the unions. and then you have the the over priced administrators and in some places like here there are 10 or 12 of them.
By the time is all said and done there is not much to pay the teacher and buy the school supplies.
would be nice to get rid of some of the teachers that really are not producing quality product, But they are protected by the union. so we just keep paying more and more. and getting less and less for your money

I think you will find that most schools, school systems, and colleages of educators,,, are run by liberals, not capitallist.

If you want to know,,, where the money goes,,, go ask your finance director of the school system. Then demand the accounting sheets.

You will be shocked to find out where it really goes.

I am appalled at some of the stuff the parents at the elementary school my baby niece goes to, too. Aside from having to purchase ALL supplies...yes, the glue, crayons, pencils, scissors, etc that used to be furnished by the school system...they also have to buy paper towels, hand sanitizer & items of this nature. I pick her up 3 days a week & on occasion, have to go in to use the facilities...and find NO soap, NO paper towels! I just do not understand, either.

You know my friend.... I have also often wondered about this. In fact, I used to work for ten years in banking and I KNOW for a fact that the schools often have a lot of money in their account. Where it goes when it seems all they do is to make MORE cuts and ask us for MORE money... I have NO idea!

Oh btw, welcome back!!! You were missed!!

Wait til high school when there's yearbook fees, science lab fees, art lab fees, etc. Those don't go toward supples, they go toward "use" of classroom areas. It won't get any better so ya better just grin & bear it.

Its amazing that back when I went to school (albeit a catholic school) these FEES were non existent.. Yeah mom had to buy supplies or we could buy them at school...but no lab fees etc in HS (again catholic school) But then again we were TAUGHT.. not entertained...we used the same books for YEARS.. Math and english and most science DONT CHANGE year by year...and History books just add on to it (supplemental editions) It ridiculous how MUCH is spent on NEW books every year.. what for?? Heck they usually dont even get half way through the book from the year before ... I can remember going up to a chalkboard (yeah a slate one too man im old ) and working on math problems side by side with other kids instead of multitudes of handouts that get tossed in a few minutes...There is too much WASTE .. anyone else remember using broken crayons from the big box to do your projects in class?? sharing stuff in class?? heck anyone remember having ART as a class?? Or Music?? how sad our kids altho they GET more they learn less
