....when is this going to end with the contractor?????
Get this.....today he's given the house another coat of paint because I could see the old color bleeding thru and I wasn't happy. Check the forum thread, "What Did You Do Today", top of page 381, to read Part 1 (I should have made it a blog then).
A few minutes ago he comes to the door and says he's done and gives me the total owed on our previously agreed price. I ask him, "You've finished the trim too?" and he says, "What trim? We agreed you were going to paint the trim.".
I go outside and sure enough, no trim has been painted.
So I go over our conversation we had when I asked for him to give me a price on painting the rest of my house a couple of weeks ago.
I pointed out that when he said, "the storm windows would have to come off and they are caulked in" that I had said, "well don't paint the windows then since the trim color around the glass is almost identical to the new color, so just paint the outer trim of the windows". He even repeated what I had told him and he gave me a price. We agreed on it.
All of a sudden today he seems to be suffering from amnesia.....he doesn't remember our conversation of less than 2 weeks ago! He doesn't remember because he thought he'd make up some of the time lost today because I made him repaint his shitty job. I'm paying for all the paint extra, no matter how many gallons more it's taken to get a good job done. His price was for the labor, I was to buy the primer and paint.
Now he says, he's probably only making $100 after he pays his helper's wages. Ya, well tell me how much you ripped me off when you were building my utility room with your verbal prices.... I suggested he needs to write down what customers say they want, and present a written estimate in the future.
He left pissed and I really don't care. He says he'll be back to paint the trim in a couple of days. I'm sure he will because I refused to pay him until he finishes the job.
He'll not be getting the next big job I've got planned. Of that, I'm sure.

He sounds like he screwed you hard. This is the type of work I do.... kind of. Painting is one of many things I do.
As far as the storm windows needing to come off, you can paint round them to the edge. They even have little plastic tools that you can use to edge. Another thing, if the color is bleeding through, then it doesnt sound like primer was used. If it was used, he put on such a thin coat that its almost useless.
I dont like giving prices on jobs just incase of unforseen problems. Like doing a roof. You take the old off and you cant put new ones on because the wood is rotten, things like that. It almost sounds like he was trying to maybe keep what was left of the paint for himself. I could be wrong though, but I doubt it.

Quite a good lesson or two here on this story. The good thing you have going for you is that you didn't pay him the rest of his money. Hope he comes back & gets everything done to your satisfaction!

you are surprised....and frustrated yet give us the impression he hasn't done right by you in the past?! Are you a glutton for punishment? Is he an idiot for not having a signed contract? Something smells rotten here.....

not, No, I'm not a glutton for punishment, I just trust too much sometimes.
He said he needed work, so I thought I'd help him out again by giving him more work since he built a 14' x 32' utility room for me last Fall. There were a couple of issues with the room and the remodeling of my bathroom, but he did resolve them to my satisfaction.
But honestly, deep down, I don't really trust him. My daughter says she reminds her of a used car salesman (no offense intended to the profession, but there are some slackers in it).
As the old saying goes....live and learn.

gunn, please see my comment above yours and it explains some of the reasons. The other one is that I live in a small town and there aren't that many local contractors anymore....they've either retired, moved or found other work. Things are really tough here right now.
