NOTE: The new Neanderthal buzz word is "atheist SO-shall-lists." It replaces "tax and spend Liburals" among all robots brainwashed since November 4 of 2009.

I was in a hardware store the other day. One of the Boss Hogg's of this corrupt county was chewing fat with the owners about how our country's economy has gone to ruin since the Moslems and Atheist So-shall-lists took over. Dang! Maybe I'm getting senile, but I shore do remember the big crash on Wall Street occurring last Fall, when the God-fearing, Ri-chus Chrischen REpublican Party was still screwing up the world.

I kept my mouth shut as the asshole raged on and on about the Democratic bankers stealing peoples houses and cars, etc and etc. I am sure there are bankers, who are members of the Democratic Party. However, most of them came of age when Roosevelt was President.

THEN . . . he started talking about that there soshulized medicine that our Moslem prezident wants to force down our throats. He cited as an example, that the soshallists have made a mess in Canada. He knew for a fact" that a half million people a year die in Canada, while they are waiting to see a doctor." He added that all the doctors and nurses are leaving Canada because they didn't want to work for a Commie government.

That did it. People were actually believing this asshole.

I asked him, " Where did you get those facts?"

He answered, "State Senator Billy Joe Joyner told us that at our county party meeting last month."

I asked, "Wasn't he the guy that put a bill before the Georgia General Assembly to make the guilotine the official means of execution in Georgia - so that the state could sell the body parts of prisoners to recoup the cost of feeding them?"

He answered, "Yep, I always thought it was a good idea, but them liburals kept it from passing."

I asked another question, "Have you ever been in Canada? Have you ever even talked to a person from Canada about their healthcare system? " He answered, "Nope, don't need to. They're a bunch of soshallists anyway."

I then informed the assembled crowd that my sister and her family had moved to Calgary, Alberta from Houston 2 1/2 years ago. They loved Canada, and were very impressed by the Canadian approach to healthcare. Most doctor's offices and hospitals are either privately owned, or operated by non-profit corporations. The province reimburses the healthcare givers just like an insurance company would here. No one, no matter what their economic condition is denied adequate healthcare. Doctors in Canada are not saddled by enormous liability insurance premiums like American doctors, because they just don't make as many mistakes!

Boss Hogg looked around to see if anyone would challenge me. When they didn't, he walked away sadly with his eyes glued to the floor.

There is one thing that my sister does NOT like about Canada. Food prices, except for Alberta produced beef, are atrocious. The leaders of Canada have dropped the ball and not developed greenhouse farms. Because of NAFTA, they concentrated on production of items to export southward and let the country become dependent on fruits and vegetable imported from Mexico and the USA. Now fuel prices have pushed imported foods through the ceiling. Well, no place is perfect.

Your post was very well written and informative, and you manage to shine the clear light of reason on many of the mistaken impressions Americans have of Canada. My one concern is that you were pretty wide of the mark on one single point, to whit;
Doctors in Canada are not saddled by enormous liability insurance premiums like American doctors, because they just don't make as many mistakes!
Unfortunately, the only real shortcoming of Canada's medical system is the complete lack of accountability Canadian doctors enjoy; if a Canadian doctor screws up your case, they DON'T run the risk of a malpractice suit!

I'm living proof that Canadian doctors make as many mistakes as any other nation's doctors; after a minor torn cartilage injury, a prominent orthopedic surgeon made extravagent promises about how he could "fix" my slightly creaky, tricky knees and make them "good as new." At the very least, he promised I'd have "90% to 95% of 'normal function', after having arthroscopic surgery on both knees." On the other hand, he told me if I didn't have the surgeries, I'd end up "completely crippled, unable to walk, or work, or anything."

(In actual fact, the arthroscopic procedures on my knees only made things infinitely worse! According to a recent study published in JAMA, arthroscopic knee surgery only make things worse and causes further damage for the overwhelming majority of torn cartilage/osteo-arthritis patients!

When that rat-bastard first got his hooks into me, I was just hitting the peak of my musical abilities and career; I had recently founded a very tight blues-rock quartet which was just starting to get noticed; we were getting plenty of premium club/hall gigs, and we were even told we were "a lock" for a main stage appearance at Ottawa's BluesFest (back then, it was the second-largest blues festival in the world after Chicago's). We had a very large and dedicated following, and we were attracting plenty of attention and acclaim.

Instead of catching a break and maybe making it big, within a few months of having arthroscopic surgery on both knees, I could no longer play any gigs; I was literally forced to retire because I couldn't even drag myself onto the stage, let alone perform two or three sets a night. I am permanently disabled by horrifically painful osteo-arthritis in both knees, and all thanks to this doctor's mismanagement of my case.

Since then, I've had expert advice from some of the best lawyers in Canada, and the universal verdict has been;
"Forget about it...you haven't a snowball's chance in Hell of successfully suing a doctor for malpractice in Canada."

That is the real reason why Canadian doctors don't pay "enormous liability insurance premiums"

If a doctor screws you up so badly that your whole life is ruined and your very livelihood is taken away from you, your only choice is either "learn to live with it," or "kick the bucket." No matter what you do, you'll never get a plugged nickel in compensation.

As if to add insult to injury, even if (against all odds) you actually successfully sue your doctor, malpractice awards have a mandatory ceiling of $280,000, and Canadian jurors almost NEVER award even a fraction of said maximum.

The plain truth of the matter is that you have absolutely no recourse under Canadian law if your doctor fouls up, even if they kill you.

Just my .02's worth, sincerely, "Mac"
