Americans have always like throwing abstract words around, that can mean a lot of different things. For example, Americans who stayed loyal to King George III, were labeled "Tories" by their Patriot neighbors, The word was synonymous with "traitor," However, to the British Red Coats, it literally meant "Loyal, God-fearing Christian Conservatives." The word "tory" originally meant "an Irish outlaw," but came to mean a member of the Conservative Political Party.of England, whose motto was "God, King and Country."
Wikipedia defines "socialism as:
Socialism refers to various theories of economic organization advocating state, worker or public ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources, and a society characterized by equal access to resources for all individuals with an egalitarian method of compensation.[1][2][3] Contrary to popular belief, Socialism is not a political system; it is an economic system distinct from capitalism. Socialism and communism are two entirely different economic systems. Communism theoretically does away with all private ownership of property. The only way that is possible, is to have a totalitarian government with the dictatorship of a single oligarchy or political party.
When the Federal government creates a national park, that is socialism. When a state government builds a highway, that is socialism. When a county government operates public schools or builds a farmers market, that is socialism. When a municipal government builds an airport, that is socialism.
This will shock many conservative Southerners, but the most socialistic state in the Union, prior to the Civil War, was Georgia. Almost immediately after ratification of the Constitution, Georgia became directly involved in the detailed planning and real estate sales in new towns. This was a tradition from the Colonial Period, when almost all of the colony's towns were laid out by professional town planners and surveyors - i.e. Savannah.
In 1840, the State of Georgia embarked on an extremely socialistic program that shocked the rest of the nation. Because the plantation system soaked up so much of the available capital, there was inadequate private capital to build railroads. Therefore, the state itself purchased the rights-of-way, built the railroads and continued to own all of the railroad lines until the end of the Civil War. Would you believe that the State of Georgia STILL owns all of the major railroad routes within its boundaries? These state-owned routes are leased to either Norfolk-Southern or CSX.
During the Irish Potato famine, only two American ports would allow Irish immigrants to enter the country, Charleston & Savannah. The State of Georgia set up booths at both of these harbors, to hire Irish men to build the rails, and Irish women to cook and wash for the state's employees. Remember this was a socialistic enterprise so the state provided all food, clothing, housing and medical care for the Irish immigrants.
Those of you of Irish descent should be proud. These Irish immigrants constructed two of the Engineering Wonders of the World. Afterward, most settled down with their new wives, and became solid citizens. The author of "Gone With the Wind," Margaret Mitchell, was descended from one of those socialistic railroad workers!
